New Knottie...and a question

Hi there ladies! I am very newly engaged (3 whole days) and I am looking to start my planning ASAP. I live in Seattle and am planning an Oct-Nov 2010 wedding in my home state.  I have lots of idea about pretty much everything, except the the church.  Do you all know of any Catholic Churches in the Metro Detroit area that takes out of staters? We are not members of a local parish here, but if we don't have a church wedding my FMIL will probably die. I am not a card carrying catholic, but the fiance is. Thanks!

Is there a specific town that you are interested in?  Ann Arbor, Detroit, Plymouth, Novi, Northville?  That may help in your search . . .

Welcome to the Knot, and congrats!

If only one of you is Catholic, there is the Academy of the Sacred Heart in Bloomfield Hills. IT's a chapel in a Catholic school that you can rent, and only one of you has to be a documented Catholic. We looked at it, but it's kind of pricy. $1,000 to rent and you have to supply your own priest & music. They can recommend those for you, though. You would still have to do the marriage classes and stuff...

    Good luck, and happy planning!

I know these ones do not have any kind of membership requirement:

The Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament downtown on Woodward Ave. It's not in a great area but it's easy to get to right off the expressway so I'm not too worried about scaring the old folks.  And it's BEAUTIFUL inside (it's where I'm getting married, so I may be a little biased Smile).  It's a little pricey at $1250, but that includes the priest and musicians, which many don't.

We also looked at the Academy of the Sacred Heart in Bloomfield Hills.  Very nice chapel, but not quite as big and ornate as the Cathedral.  $900 but does NOT include priest or musicians.  You have to find your own, but the lady in charge said she could offer rec's.

If you or your FI attended U of M, you can marry at St. Mary's Student Parish.

I know there's at least one or two other Catholic school chapels that do weddings, but I can't remember what they're called or where they are.

My church marries non-members for a site fee (or however you want to phrase it) of $500. St Mary of the Hills in Rochester Hills.

Welcome to the board Kelki! I can help a bit, but as one prior poster said, it would help us all if we knew whether you had a specific area of metro Detroit in mind. It might also help if we knew what was important to you.....cost? location? size and grandeur? Simple?

I looked into the following during my venue search:

Madonna University in Livonia, off I-96: they have a small chapel, and catering onsite and some nice grounds for summer events:

    http://cms.madonna.edu/pages/university-resources/facilities-rental-and-catering

The IHM Mother house in Monroe MI also has a chapel (much nicer than Madonna) and catering onsite:

    http://www.ihmsisters.org/www/Facilities_Rental_and_Catering/eventsplanning.asp

Other ideas, as mentioned above, are monasteries or Catholic religious affiliations. The ones I mentioned were the most inexpensive, and if you just want the chapels, you can choose another location for your wedding.

It would help to know how much you want to spend on your event.

Unfortunately in the Detroit Archdiocese, other than a few select locations, the churches pretty much expect you to have a relationship with them in order to book a wedding. My friend is a parishioner of St Mary's in Royal Oak, and they would not let her daughter get married there because SHE was not a member.

    Welcome and Congrats!

Does your FI belong to a church anywhere? If so, they may be of assistance in coordinating with a church here. But a lot of churchs do require some relationship to be married in them - does FI's family live in the metro Detroit area? Perhaps they could talk to the church they are a member of to see whether its an option.

Note: This isn't meant to be snarky just something to keep in mind. You will have to meet the pre-cana class requirements and honestly if you call up a church and say we need to get married here to appease FMIL they may be less inclined to help you. The sacrament of marriage is a serious thing in the Catholic church, not just a  place to get married to make the parents happy. Talk with your FI about what you and he want (not just what FMIL wants) and move forward from there.

    Good luck!

Hi and welcome! Hopefully I can help a little bit. If you are willing to get married in dowtown detroit there are several churches that don't have membership requirements that I know of (some of these I have had friends get married at others it is just word of mouth).  Try the following:
    -Sweetest Heart of Mary
    -St. Josephats
    -St. Joseph's
    -Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament
-St. Peter and Paul (on Jefferson)-I don't think they have a membership requirment but I am not sure.
    -Grosse Pointe Academy Chapel
    Trying for #1 since 5/2010
12/2010-hysteroscopy done to remove uterine polyps
    6/2/11=BFP!!!!
