Ceremony & Reception Site Help

Hi everyone!

My fiance and I are looking for a nice outdoor ceremony site, with the reception either indoors or outdoors. For the ceremony, I'd really like it to be lakeside. We live in the Detroit Metro area and my fiance wants to keep the location within an hour radius  to make it easier for our guests, so that rules out northern Michigan or a SW Lake Michigan wedding.

Does anyone know of any nice venues in our area to accommodate:
* waterside ceremony
* backup ceremony site in case of rain
* ballroom or outside tent reception for ~80 guests
* pricing less than $100 per person

Thanks in advance!
Liz

Re: Ceremony & Reception Site Help

  • My reception is at MacRay Harbor in Harrison Twp, which is right on Lake St. Clair.  Our ceremony isnt there, BUT I know they do ceremonies.  It's a beautiful venue, this is their website!  http://macray.com/

    I'm having my ceremony and reception at Waldenwoods in Hartland.  It's at US 23 and M 59 which is just under an hour from the middle of the suburbs (as in Royal Oak).

    They offer two options: one is a lakeside ceremony (with backup via either a rentable tent or doing the ceremony in the reception hall) followed by a reception in their cool, old restorted and rustic reception hall which is steps from the ceremony site.

    The second is an outdoor tented wedding elsewhere on the grounds.  I'm not sure what the ceremony would look like or if it's lakeside since I took the first option.

    What I can tell you is that the grounds are gorgeous and the coolest part is that your event is the only one happening.  If two brides are getting married the same day, one at the hall and one at the outdoor tent, they are on opposite sides of the park and don't even see each other's event.

    So far I have only positive things to say about Waldenwoods.  They offer a large variety of menu options from sit down to buffet to stations and you can stay well under $100 for the food.

    Hope that helps!
  • Greystone golf course/banquet center fits your bill. It's gorgeous and the service is wonderful. You actually get a ton for your money. The only thing is that I know they have a 150 guest minimum for Saturday weddings so you may have to go with Sunday or Friday.

  • Welcome to the board !!!! Looking forward to hearing about your wedding.

    Our venue, Greenmead Village in Livonia isn't waterside (unless you consider the small pond). But it meets the rest of your criteria.

    Does anyone know of any nice venues in our area to accommodate:
    * waterside ceremony
    * backup ceremony site in case of rain (lovely historic chapel built in mid 1800's)
    * ballroom or outside tent reception for ~80 guests (banquet facility holds up to 100, you could also pitch a tent.........by the little pond, LOL)
    * pricing less than $100 per person : you  have to bring in your own caterer and liquor. We spent much less than $100 per person with our catering package from Holiday Markets and the liquor we supplied. Probably about $25 per person plus the serving stuff & people, still less than $50 per person)

    They also have lovely gardens, where the picture below in my siggy was taken.

    If you go to my bio link below, the vendor tab in there has the link to their info.
  • For an outdoor wedding ceremony I would check out Mill Race Village in Northville, that is where I am having mine and its inexpensive, it has a pond and a mini waterfall with lots of scenery (great for photos). You can also use the chapel there for backup incase it rains at no additional cost.

    Happy Planning!!

  • Wow, thank you all for the suggestions!

    I have Waldenwoods on my list to visit, and now a few more :)

  • Im not sure where at in Metro you are, but if your anywhere downriver, Im pretty sure there are some places in Wyandotte/Trenton on the water you can check out!

    RE: the PP, I don't know of any waterfront venues in Trenton. But my reception will be at Silver Shores Waterfront in Wyandotte. It's on the river and it's reasonably priced (think $50ish a person). They have a gazebo for waterside ceremonies too. They are a dream to work with. They also have an outdoor bar and a lovely, spacious patio if you want to be outdoors.
