Are there any good cakes out there?

I am a cake eater and I love cakes, pies, etc. I been going to different bakeries for cake tasting and honestly not at all impressed. The cake designs are fabulous but the taste is very bland. I'm so frustrated because the cakes I get for birthdays and events from the little mom and pops bakeries or home made bakers are so good and moist but I wanted to step it up a little for my wedding. Im so surprised at the lack of flavor these so called "highly recommended" bakeries has. I've been to Mannino's, Elite Sweets, and Sweet Dreams but I want a cake that will make me hum after tasting it.LOL. Just a really good butter yellow is ideal. Please please if you know a great bakery or place to order my wedding cake please post it. I am desperate.

I'd look into East Detroit Bakery on 9 Mile just east of Gratiot.  I've been getting birthday cakes and such for years there.  Also, one of my friends got her wedding cake from there and she got a ton of compliments on it.

Go for a tasting at Iversons in Dearborn. Call ahead and tell them what flavors you want and they make 3 different little cakes for you to try and take the rest home. I also remember having a really delicious tasting at bakery in Allen Park called Sweet Tooth Cakes.

Thanks for the recommendations. I will definately follow through. I'm not trying to be difficult, but I would also want my cake to be remembered.

Try Josefs in grosse pointe. They made little cakes for us, all decorated :) they were soo good we booked that day. Call in your sample orders ahead (the yellow cake with chocolate mousse is delish!!) Some people have said the owner can seem a little brash, but I think he's a perfectionist and just wants you to get the best cake - which is just what I was looking for.

I second East Detroit, but while you are in the area.... I also love Giuseppe's Bakery. They are on Kelly between 9 and 10. They have great cakes and the best cassata cake in town. I have tried them all Bommarito's , Mannino's etc and there's is the best (coming from a Sicilian, that's something)  I don't know if there design is the best, and I don't really care. I have bought dozen's of cakes from them over the years and they are always pretty, but taste amazing.

FI cared a lot about the flavor of the cake, much like you.

We ended up going with a home-based baker who has done only a couple wedding cakes, because we had much the same experience as you with bakeries.  FI didn't like them - that said, we didn't taste at any of the places ladies recommended on here.  But I'm confident our cake will come out great, and it's at a great price.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Holiday Market's cakes!!!! I always get mine at the one in Canton, FI is not much of a cake eater but the one thing he put his foot down on was not having a cake from there. :(

We went to Sorella's in Livonia.  Very nice people working there, Monica is a doll. I found them from my DJ, he said if you want an honest opinion on a cake, ask your DJ because they eat a lot of different cakes. :)  Their cakes were yummy too!

We had the same problem when choosing our cake. While the cakes we tasted might be moist and ok, they were all just fancy variations of cake from a box mix. UNTIL we tried Give Thanks Bakery in Rochester. Nothing else compares. You definitely pay for the difference but it is worth every penny! Friends who don't even like cake are still talking about our cake 6 months later. The bakery's focus is super quality, fresh ingredients and every cake is custom. GL!

I'm using Nicole's Sweet toppings in Milford. My fiance does not typically like cake but he loves hers! I on the other hand love cake and hers is one of the best I've ever tasted. We tried a couple other bakeries and they were just ok. Also, her pricing was the best I've seen so we are using her.

My FI and I are not cake lovers so we weren't really into cake until we met Gwen! She does cakes out of her house and we wake some day craving her cakes!! Everything was moist and homemade and just plain amazing. Her business is Gwen's cakes.

    Good Luck!

Pronto in Royal Oak makes theirs from scratch.  Makes a big difference!  Their red velvet cake won some award from Oprah.

We tried Sweet and Savory, which is located in Oxford. We tried a sample from our DJ and I can't get the taste out of my head. I loved it. We are going for a tasting next week and I'm planning on booking.

The Sweet Course is fantastic. Our cake was stunning, but it was also incredibly flavorful and moist. http://www.sweetcourse.com/

FI and I are totally crazy dessert people.  The best cake I have had is, hands down, Cakes by Stephanie in Milford.  Her chocolate with ho-ho filling is so decadent and the cherry chip is heavenly.

Second choice is absolutely Home Bakery in Rochester.

    Good luck to you!
