Day Of Coordinator...do you need one?

Hey everyone! I was wondering if anyone used a Day of Coordinator - I'm not looking for names, I have one in mind,  I just am trying to decide/convince my FI that it is necessary.  What exactly do they do and if you had one, are you glad you got one?

I'm not using one simply because I'm working with a lower budget and know people where as long as I show them it once (set up one centerpiece for example) they are set.  They will be doing everything for me.

They act as director of the day and pay all the vendors.  If there are any issues vendors also speak with the DoC to figure something out.  They will also sometimes set up centerpieces, aisles, etc pending on what you need them to do.

If I get one I think I'll do a DoC swap so I'll be one for someone and then they can be one for mine.

I did and it was the best $ I spent! I literally booked her a month before the wedding and DH was all for it, as he was seeing how stressed I was.

I used Rachel Caudill from A Beautiful Day Events...I HIGHLY recommend her. She made all of the final contacts with my vendors, helped with our timeline, set up the reception area AND added extra touches on her own to make it absolutely beautiful. It was a HUGE stress relief to me, as she also serves as the day-of contact...so if anything went wrong, she was the person to contact, not me. I didn't even know about a few minor hiccups throughout the day because she her job perfectly.

I decided not to because we were so beyond our budget in so many other areas. I have an uncle who is an event coordinator that will be helping. But right now I am wishing I had hired one! Last minute details are stressing me out!

It is a tradition in my family that the bride's god parents act as DOCs "Master and Mistress of Ceremony", it is a way that we honor them.  If your FI is worried about spending the money could you pick a close friend or family member to help you out with a few specific things that you won't want to worry about.

If you're trying to convince your FI to get one, don't listen to my opinion! ; )

I did not have one, but I had vendors that were SUPER on top of everything and my mom and aunts stepped in where they needed to.  We didn't run into any problems, but if some problem had arose, I might have regretted that decision.  However, I don't think I have EVER heard of anyone who has had a DOC and regretted it.  Most people say it was the best money they spent.

I hired one mainly because we can't get into our reception room until 2 hours before and that is when the ceremony is going on.  The reception hall would handle some set up but I have a bunch of DIY projects and want to make sure they are set up correctly.  Also, it was important for me that someone clean up at the end of the night because I didn't want any family members getting stuck with that job.

The above is EXACLTY why I got one. I have a ton of DIY, can't get in until 2 hrs before the ceremony time (and they are at the same site, argh), and all the banquet hall supplies is tables & chairs. I need each & every vendor there, on time, marching like soldiers to get everything set up. The only way that was going to happen (plus get all my DIY set up) was with a DOC.

Honestly, I debated about it long & hard. But I've put way too much planning into this to have something major fall apart on the day of the wedding. So my budget took the hit.

Thanks Girls - I'm leaning towards getting one and it is a friend of a friend so the price is pretty reasonable! I think my FI will like the savings from the DIY centerpieces enough to be ok with getting a DOC.  Gotta love a strict budget FI! =)

My DOC more than paid for herself simply by putting together my floral centerpieces.  Definitely cost effective in my book :)
