Honeymoon in Michigan?

FI and I just put an offer on a new house. Got a great offer but needs a lot of work. So... we compromised and decided to put the $ we would spend on a HM into carpeting and flooring for the new house.

We still want to do something, just something less expensive.

Anyone have any ideas of places we could do in MI?? (or the close vicinity?)

Thanks!!

Hi!  I've never posted/responded to anything before...  I've been lurking for awhile!  :-)  Anyway...

FI and I are getting married in Frankenmuth and the current plan is just to stay there for a few days afterwards - we're planning a trip to Hawaii in 2013 and instead of taking a big trip now for our Honeymoon we're just staying in Frankenmuth for a few days and enjoying some "just us" time.  :-)

There's all sorts of places you can go...  Frankenmuth, up North, Mackinaw...  You'll find something that fits your interest (and budget).  :-)

Frankenmuth would be fun.  Traverse City is also very pretty with lots to do.  Personally I love Grand Haven, it is a little tourist town south of muskegon and west of Grand Rapids.

I love Traverse City! You can stay at a B&B or at Chateau Chantal (my fav!). I love love love it up there - especially in September/October. Wine tours on Mission Peninsula and Leelanau are awesome ways to spend the day. Oh, and stop by The Boat House on Mission for lunch/dinner and watch all the boats :) You could also split the trip between TC and the Petoskey area - especially if the HM is during the summer. Stay at a little B&B, go to the beach, and eat every meal at The American Spoon!! When are you planning for the HM? Even if it's the winter, you can have a great time in MI (skiing and spa weekend??). Now I'm all excited to plan our next trip LOL!

We're getting married on 9.10.11..... but hoping to find fun little place we've never been to.

Chicago would be nice and close. You could always take a train from there to save on gas and parking prices. Also, Traverse City and Mackinac Island are beautiful places to stay as well.

My fiance and I are doing a UP tour. Pictured Rocks, Teqhamenon Falls, Copper Town, and Mackinac Island. We are going 2 weeks after our wedding, and hoping for beautiful fall colors.

Traverse City would be great!  Do wine tastings in the Mission Penninsula, see the water and beaches, go to the casino if you're in to that.  Could be a lot of fun!

It's out of Michigan, but what about Toronto?

The places mentioned above are all great

Check out Stafford's or Perry Hotel in Petoskey online. Nice, older, historic types of hotels with great rooms. Traverse City is wonderful, as is Mackinac Island. Check out the Grand Hotel there.

Also, sign up for www.travelzoo.com, listing Detroit as your "home" area. You'll get travel deals for all over, and often they include Michigan places.

Your honeymoon will be after the kids start school, but before the weather gets crummy. You should find some good deals.

    Good luck.

Dan and I had planned a trip to Holland/Sauatuck on the west side of the state  You might consider something like that.

A tip about Petoskey/Harbor Springs - there is a Holiday Inn in Petoskey that has a "house" limo.  It's totally free...and you can have it take you into town to diner/the bar and then it will pick you up to bring you back.  SUCH a nice little perk!

If you are the outdoorsy types, you could go all of the way up to Isle Royale and take a week long backpacking trip.  I did this in '98 with some high school friends and it is, to this day, my all time favorite trip.

We're considering Charlevoix, Mackinaw Island, or maybe Mackinac City (which is cheaper than staying on than the Island).

Although these are not michigan but they are just 4 hours away and so nice and not that expensive.

First one in Sybaris Hotel in Indiana  www.sybaris.com

They actually have a 20 ft long pool in each room, that is also heated. They are about 5 feet deep as well, and above them sits a large plant that works like a waterfall.  Very nice!  its like having your own mini apartment with your own private indoor pool. I never would of believed it, I thought people were stretching it a bit, until we walked in.

Another nice spot..  Pleasant Valley Cabins  In Logan Ohio,   Have a gas fireplace inside (Real flame) and your own hot tub on the back porch. Very secluded.  Lots of shopping in the area.  If you never been to hocking hills ohio its something fun to see. I never thought ohio had hills like west virginia .   The View is amazing! very beautiful there.  Close to Columbus zoo and other tourist attractions too.
