PSA: Passport Costs

I just read that passport prices are going up next Tuesday.  So if you need to renew/get your passport, do it this weekend if you can!

New:  $100 to $135
Renew:  $75 to $110

Yes...this is so irritating, but I'm glad I already have mine.

And...when you get married you do have to change your passport to read your new last name (if you're changing your last name) in order for it to be valid. If you got your current passport less than 1 year from when you get married, you submit your marriage license and some forms and there is no charge. However, if it has been over a year, you have to submit the same forms and documentation and a renewal fee, which is like $90 (not sure if that is increasing as well)...I did some research on this when I first heard about the increase on the news. So, HTH some people out.

    Thanks for posting this :)

Yeah, I'm frustrated with FI as I have been bugging him for months to get his passport and be done with it.  Has he done it?  Nope!  So tonight I tell him this info about prices and he says "Yeah I know, I saw it on someone's facebook last week."  Um what?  So why have you not gone out and gotten it?!? Ugh.  It just seems stupid to waste the $35 because he just doesn't want to do it.

Yes you will have to get a new one after you change your name. But, no, if you just applied for yours recently you won't have to pay the renewal fee. The fee is charged if you've had your current passport for over 1 year.

I think it such BS that you have to pay the fee again if it's been over a year...i got divorced and now i'm getting remarried and it's been over a year so i have to pay $90 so they can change my name eventhough your passport is valid for 10 years.....anyway they can steal money they will!!!! ugh!

I totally agree, I paid for a passport valid for 10 years and now 5 years into it I'll have to pay for a new one. Doesn't really sound fair to me either.

    Um, THIS.

We are going to Hawaii for the honeymoon so I won't need it right away (not like I would have time to change my name before the honeymoon anyway).  I plan on waiting until I need it again to pay the renewal fee so I will get the full 10 years of use, vesus paying to change it right away and possibly sitting on it for a year or longer.
