How easy / difficult is it to file for unemployment? Being a contractor and having to file for that one week. Austin seems to think it'll be a pain in the butt and is opting not to do it. He thinks its going to also screw up our taxes.

Is it really that bad? Do you have any idea when you get paid?

He registered when he had lost his job but never collected because he found work before he received his first check.

TIA

It's easy. You just file online and call MARVIN two weeks after. You should have a check within 3 weeks of your last day of work.

Usually you have to put your resume on MichiganWorks and go to their office and show them, get a paper stamped, etc. but if you have a return to work date you don't have to do any of that resume stuff.

It won't screw up your taxes...in fact you don't have to pay taxes on the first $2400 (or something very close to $2400).

The only difficult part is if you don't get your unemployment check. Then you have to call their help hotline which is always busy and you'll be on hold for 30 minutes at least. This always seems to happen with the first check. They will clear it up for you and mail out your check though.

I live pay check to pay check so the small hassle is worth it for me.
