Question: Insurance policies

Today when I was checking my To Do Checklist on The Knot, it told me that I should "arrange for all insurance policies to include you and your future spouse: health, auto, homeowner's, and life insurance." Is this really something we can do before we're married? And, if we do, won't we then need to change everything again when we get married (I have a new name)? Thanks for the information!

I'm not worrying about that until after the wedding. Lord knows I have enough to worry about!

I am already under FI's health insurance coverage, but I became his "domestic partner" when I moved here, and I assume I will need to change my name after we get married.  As for the other stuff, no time to worry about that now! :D

the only one I worried about updating was ring insurance, because I wanted to be sure we were covered on our honeymoon.  I still am not on his auto insurance, b/c I almost never need to drive the car, so it's not worth the $$$.  (As I result, I literally never drive the car, b/c I wouldn't be insured obviously...)We have no life insurance. (I think there is some disability insurance built into my husband's job contract though)... And we already shared renter's insurance.  And we kept our separate health insurance policies, since we each get more individually favorable policies through our own employer/school, so I don't know about those...

Killian - I just have a question about what your concern was with the ring insurance.  Why would that change the day you were married?  I just want to make sure I'm not missing something.  My ring is on my homeowners insurance but I don't see why being married would change anything.  Thanks!

Becky--I just wanted to make sure that our wedding rings were insured also before we started wearing them out & about & abroad on our honeymoon.  My e-ring insurance didn't change, but I added our wedding rings to the policy.  If you plan on insuring your wedding rings, then this may be relevant for you too.

Good point, I thought you were talking about your e-ring which probably already would have been insured!

I just called to get on his health insurance but becuase we are both self employed and pay our own it is cheaper for us to have our own policies. We will get on a family plan when we have a baby.I have to look into auto insurance but since we already live together we are both already on each other policies are 2nd drivers.if I was you I would just wait until after the wedding to deal with any of this stuff!

If you have life insurance policies, you can def fill out new beneficiary designation forms prior to the wedding.  If you're changing your name, I wouldn't make any changes to your auto policy under post-marriage.  Also, don't do anything to the homeowner's, unless you change your name on the deed (which is not necessary, IMO).
