Music is Key Element - Recommendations for a GREAT DJ?

My fiance and I are having an outdoor wedding at the in July 2010 . Music is going to be a KEY element to our reception, so it is very important that I can find a DJ who can caterer to the variety of musical genres that will be represented: 70s (the hippies), 80s, 90s, and now. We don't want any chicken dances or line dances!!!!  We really just want everyone to have a great time dancing and socializing with a laid back DJ who doesn't talk too much. Any recommendations that you could provide me would be GREATLY Appreciated. I am having the most stress thinking about the music...it is what people remember!

This was very important to FI and I, we did not want someone who talks a lot or dances or tries to get guests to do stuff they don't want to do. Same thing; no chicken dance, etc. We're going with John Cristoferi. He has a great personality, great taste in music, and he's been doing weddings for something like over 20 years. He works by word of mouth, and he's very successful. Also, he knows weddings. He checks name pronunciation with every wedding party member being introduced, he has an assistant to help him make sure no parents or grandparents miss important parts of the reception, like parent dances or cake cutting, because they're in the bathroom or something. He's very attentive to your own musical tastes and will do a great job.

We booked Wayne Partello of Boston Party Professionals last night for our reception.  He came highly recommended and he put us at ease when he told us about his planning process.  The site has a back-end planning function that each client has access to through a personal login and password.  This system ensures that your wedding is planned and executed exactly how you want it!  Another plus, they offer uplighting for $50 a light, which is the cheapest I've seen.HTH!www.TheBostonDJ.com

Dan McCarthy (bostondj.com) is who we used and he was fantastic. Our dance floor was packed the entire time, he won't do any of the cheesy stuff, and when you fill out your playlists, he asks for a do not play list and he will stick to it. Dan was the only DJ we met with- friends of ours had used him and we pretty much knew that he was who we were going to use. His prices are also really reasonable for the level of quality that he brings to the table. You won't be sorry if you book with DJ Dan :)

I'm with you on music being the Key element to a wedding. It's the one thing that can make or break a wedding. That being said FI and myself were looking for someone who did not believe in doing coreographed dances, didn't use props, and no cheesy games. We found Peter from NuImage and he fits what we were looking for perfectly. He is $2,500 which is a little pricier than most but we feel that he is totally worth it. He is a very laid back guy, but carries a great presence when acting as the MC. I found his to be extremely professional and from the reviews I have seen, brides who have used him thought he was perfect. GL!

Hey! I just did reviews of my wedding that was on Oct 9 and i loved my DJ.  His name is Erik Buford from Event Experience. He's fantastic. Here's a link to my review of him if you are interested. http://talk.theknot.com/boards/main_frame.aspx?page=ShowForum.aspx?ForumID=89

Hmmm that link did work so here's a copy/paste of my review.  He's very reasonable too..he charges $250 an hour for his services.  Hope this helps! DJ- Erik  Buford from Event Experience A+ Erik was awesome! It was so funny…the moment everyone was told the dance floor was open for the night it all of a sudden just completely filled and was like that the rest of the night. Erik listened to exactly what we were looking for and met with us a couple weeks before the wedding to go over everything again. He helped us choose our entrance songs and we ended up doing a different song for all the people being introduced. It was awesome and started the night off right. He knew exactly what songs to play and when to throw in a slow song too to rest up a bit. I could not have been more happy with Erik.

We were VERY happy with Aaron Topfer. Everyone, from age 6 to 60, danced the whole time and thought he was great. We went to a wedding a month after ours and after hearing the DJ there, we realized what a good choice we had made going with Aaron - he definitely knows what he's doing.

ditto eouellet. music was the most important thing to us, too, and we were thrilled with aaron. the dance floor was packed before dinner ended, and remained packed til the reception ended- with an hour extension. he was professional, courteous, and executed everything perfectly. if you would like more details, or our must play/do not play list, let me know. hth!

Marty from NuImage!!! We just had him for our wedding and he did an amazing job!!! Our dance floor was full before the meal was even served and it stayed that way for the entire reception!!! Like PP said NuImage was a little on the pricey side but totally worth every penny!!!
