Readings at the ceremony

So I am having quite a hard time finding readings that I absolutely love for our cermoney. My reverend has given me about a dozen and I have just asked her for some more, but I figured I would ask all you ladies to see what you think. We are both Catholic but we are not getting married in a church. I am looking for more "non-religious" readings. Any help is appreciated! :) Thanks!

Re: Readings at the ceremony

  • Maybe you could find something from a children's book that would work for you guys.  I've heard "The Places You'll Go" by Dr. Seuss and an excerpt from "The Velveteen Rabbit" about what is real, and both of those were great.
  • I'm a Spanish teacher and my FI is a history teacher that specializes in Native American History, so we're having one reading be a Pablo Neruda poem and the other is going to be an Apache blessing.  Poems are a great way to go, there are so many good ones!  Also as PP mentioned, storybooks are a great place to look too.  If either you or your FI are into music or a particular band you could have an excerpt of some lyrics that mean a lot to you.
  • We are using a poem by George Elliot called to be one with each other. If you google ceremony readings a ton of stuff comes up.
  • We are doing a poem by Thomas Kempis
  • We used "On Love' by Kahlil Gibran. It's from a book called "The Prophet" that we all read back in the 1970's, LOL.

He also has one "On Marriage". http://www.katsandogz.com/onmarriage.html
  • I love love love mine!  Here it is...

From the Beyond Words Daily Readings in the ABC's of Faith

"They say they will love, comfort, honor each other to the end of their days.

They say they will cherish each other and be faithful to each other always.

They say they will do these things not just when they feel like it, but even -- for better for worse, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health -- when they don’t feel like it at all.

In other words, the vows they make could hardly be more extravagant.

They give away their freedom. They take on themselves each other’s burdens.

They bind their lives together... The question is, what do they get in return?

"They get each other in return...

There will always be the other to talk to, to listen to...

There is still someone to get through the night with, to wake into the new day beside.

If they have children, they can give them, as well as each other, roots and wings.

If they don’t have children, they each become the other’s child.

"They both still have their lives apart as well as a life together. They both still have their separate ways to find.

But a marriage made in heaven is one where a man and a woman become more richly themselves together than the chances are either of them could ever have managed to become alone."

It was between this one and two others (by the Alchemist or the blessing of the hands)
