Question on fittings + recs

Hi all,

Can someone give me an idea on the general timescale and frequency of fittings before your wedding? I live in California but am getting married in Mass, and bought my wedding gown there. It is ready for pick up now and I'm not sure if I should ship it to California and get fittings done here, then ship back (and deal with the general scariness + expense of shipping my gown!), or if I should get fittings done in Mass and fly out every so often to do this.

Also, do most seamstresses just store your gown until a few weeks before the wedding? This is important to me in both cases because I live with my fiance in California so wouldn't really want to store the dress in our apartment, and if I get it done in Boston, I obviously will not be there.

Also, if I do get fittings done in Mass, woul appreciate some recs for seamstresses in the area (suburbs around Boston preferred). I have heard good things about Chris O'Hare but am weary about hearing her place is a mess. Thanks!

Re: Question on fittings + recs

  • I have a similar dilemma, but bought my dress in MA.  The dress shop held it for 5 months and its now sitting at the seamstress basically until my June 1 wedding.

I will be in Boston for 2 weeks near Easter and one week before the wedding.  I've technically had a first fitting (its a sample and has to be let out) and then I will have 2 around Easter and the final one the week of the wedding.

The best thing to do is to call whichever seamstress you plan to use and find out how she plans to work because I had originally planned to wait until spring and she insisted on taking my dress earlier to work on in Dec/Jan.  Also, they can only work on so many dresses so its good to get scheduled and and on her calendar.

  • Anahit is amazing, but books up fast.  Call her ASAP.  She holds your dress until literally the day before the wedding,.  It is cleaned/pressed in the week prior so when you pick it up you can (actually, this is what Anahit requires to maintain her good work) take it straight to wherever you are getting ready.
  • Thank you both! I will check out Anahit
  • I love anahit..... I've already have two fittings and the third is in march. Shes awesome. Oh and our wedding is April 6
  • Another vote for Anahit!

I used Hranush in Watertown. She is Anahit's sister in law.  I was happy with how my dress came out, but she was very expensive.
