Looking for a Dress now, is it too soon???

Hi Ladies,
So I heard about the Running of the Brides being held this month and I think it would be a good Idea to go. My only concern is that we plan to get married until April of 2011 and I am not sure if getting a dress more than a year in advance is a good idea.
What do you think?

I dont think its ever too early to look for a dress!  You never know when you will come across your dream gown.  I say go, if you dont find anything, at least you got to be a part of the experience!  And if you do find something there, then bonus!

As I am now officially a 2 dress bride I would advise against it. I went 15 month before my wedding, fell in love with a dress and my mother purchased it. Now with 8 months to go, I have ordered a new dress. I am just not in love with my 1st one. You are going to be going into bridal shops for bm dresses and mothers dresses and you are going to be so tempted to look.  I am now having a hard time selling my first dress so it may be a total loss. I swore up and down that I would NEVER be a 2 dress bride, but here I am.

But bright side AlwaysABridesmaid:  You can have a sick trash the dress(es)! 

Have you tried a consignment shop for yourother  dress?

If you do plan to go to the running of hte brides, I would definitely hit a few salons first.  The event requires you to impulse buy since you can't go back and get the same dress again.  So you want ot make sure you've looked at your options before you go there. 

My friend planned to do it, so we hit David's Bridal ahead of time so she'd have some ideas of what looks good on her.  She ended up falling in love with a dress there and just bought it!

Also, you know they do the running again on August 20, 2010 in Boston, right?  That timing might be better for you with your wedding in April 2011.

I don't think it's too early to start looking, but I would be very careful about buying this far out. You want to be sure in your decision. Just know thyself. Does your taste change often? Do you think you'll see something else you love in the next few months? 

The ROTB could be a great kick off experience, but just keep in mind that you have plenty of time to make this decision.

I agree with the girls- it's definitely not too early to start looking (trying on dresses is so much fun!!) but be careful about buying too early.   I went to Vows my first time shopping, thought I fell in love with an Amsale gown and then when I went back and tried it on with my mom, it was kind of like "What was I thinking?!"  Luckily I returned it in time to at least only lose my deposit (which they are nice enough to let me use on something else in the store if I want) but I still would say give it a little more time and at least a few trials in a boutique before making a purchase

Blueyed, I haven't done consignment yet, that or the trash the dress will be my last resort. I figure I will keep it on ebay and craigs list for a while

I waited until about 7 months out. I knew exactly what I wanted and once I found it I bought it. After that I refused to look in magazines or anything. I know I love my dress, but I don't want to tempt myself.

My mother and her sisters all wore the same dress because they had no $ so if I ever second guess my dress I think how lucky I am to have one. You know? Good luck in your search

I don't think it's too soon. I bought my dress a year in advance and I'm still in love. I also did ROTB but didn't find anything. I'm not into fighting over dresses, it gives me anxiety! The experience was so much fun though. All my girls slept over the night before, we made t-shirts and were there in the wee hours of the morning. It was a blast! 

If anything, just go to try on dresses with no expectations. If you realize the bridal salon is the way for you go to Bella Sera Bridal in Danvers. They're great!

You could also try the "Trash to Treasure" board on the nest too!

Thanks for all the great advice ladies. I will probably wait for the next ROTB since it will be closer to my wedding date. I will defenatly start looking around just to see what style I like and what looks best on me.
