Music for cocktail hour

What type of music did you play for your cocktail hour? I'd like live music, but have a dj for the reception.

Anyone have any suggestions?

We've hired the International String Trio for our ceremony but I know they do perform at cocktail hours as well. They play all types of music and I just love their sound.

We hired a harpist, Nancy Hurrell, for our ceremony and cocktail hour. She sounds great and is very reasonably priced.

We had an acoustic guitarist. I was a little nervous about how he was going to be but he was great!! Our venue lent itself to such; we were married outside in the garden and it was the most gorgeous day of the summer. While I never got to hear him up close and personal except for the ceremony music, I could hear him in the distance during cocktail hour as we were around the grounds taking pictures.

I made a playlist for our cocktail hour of classic jazz standards, and old Hollywood and Broadway tunes. We love old movies and I'm a Broadway buff so I wanted to create a fun, light atmosphere of tunes that people would recognize, but not the typical Magic 106.7 type stuff.

I hired Tom Pendergast to play acoustic guitar--he was AWESOME! I had sent him a list of songs I liked, but told him he could stray from that as well. He kept everything in the genre of what I asked for and really did an amazing job. He gets really into it, and I love guitar for background music, so it worked out great for us. He is really friendly and can play anything. If there's a specific song you want that he doesn't know, he'll learn it. Really nice guy. We also hired him to play at the ceremony. Definitely recommend.
