Thank you for hosting shower?

My fiance and I are getting married in NYC this October - he is from Boston (and all his family from New England) and I am from NJ. My "official" shower will be in my hometown this August, given by my mother... his mother, in the meantime, is hosting a separate, smaller shower at her home in Boston this coming weekend.  

I'm not so much concerned about my own mother - but was wondering if there is any etiquette regarding a proper thank you to his mother?  Is there something I should be doing?

What type of hostess gift would be appropriate?

You should write her a thank you note for hosting the party.  If you'd like to get her a small gift as well, that would be nice.

ETA: You can get soaps, a bottle of wine, candles, etc.--whatever her style is.  I got my shower hostess a "Thank You" set of lotion and soap from Philosophy (bought at Sephora).

Just something she likes.
If she loves wine, maybe you can get her a bottle.
If she likes Bath and Body Works type stuff, you could pick up a gift basket.
It doesn't have to be anything extravagant.

A bouquet of flowers (already in a vase), a hand-written thank you note & another small thing she'd enjoy (bottle of wine, candle, etc.).

I sent flowers and a thank you note to my bff's mom who hosted my "big shower" and I brought potted flowers to H's grandmother who hosted the small family shower for his side and sent her a thank you note after. Since it was spring, they were both excited to get the flowers but I think any small token that you think they would like would be fine.

Thanks for the ideas everyone!  I ended up buying my future MIL a gift certificate to a local restaurant in Boston that I know is one of her favorites.  I thanked her for all the obvious hard work she put into creating such a lovely, special day (she hosted the wedding in her home)... and after so much work that weekend, I told her to take a night off and treat herself to not cooking. She was thrilled!
