What would be appropriate to wear?

Hi.... I'm new here, I'm not getting married anytime soon but I will be attending a wedding early next month. I have a bit of an interesting situation as I've been invited to an "odd" wedding and I really have to attend.

The couple is sort of redneckish and if youve ever heard of the "trash the dress" idea, well they are applying that to the wedding itself. After dinner is served there will be dancing in the mud and then a mud race.... No im not kidding, thats what they want.

As a person attending this im wondering what to wear? Because the bride set the dress code for guests as basically as formal or casual as you want, but she will be wearing a very nice dress and the bridesmaids will be wearing nice dresses as well....so i dont think it would be appropriate not to wear a dress myself.. although obviously it will be ruined by the end of it. What do you guys think? Do you think a dress from a more casual clothing store l ike forever21 would be appropriate? And any idea about shoes, usually I would think heels or nice flats would be appropriate, any recommendations on where to find nice, dressy ones that are not too expensive?

She is family and ill admit it sounds like fun and i respect the idea, its a rebellion against the more uptight, ridiculously expensive weddings that everyone seems to have (not to offend anyone here! I personally want a big fancy wedding myself, but I can see why others would not.)

Thanks for any advice/thoughts! I know this is a bit of an odd question haha.

Re: What would be appropriate to wear?

  • I'd look for a cute outfit that doesn't cost much so if you participate in the mud dance, you won't be sad that you ruined an expensive dress.  I recently found cute designer dresses at Ross for less than $30.  I also recently went to a wedding where a guest wore high heeled Crocs.  Those would be washable.
  • I would go to forever 21 and buy a cute cheap dress that you don't mind trashing. Target also has cute dresses for cheap. Maybe wear flip flops with the dress so you wont ruin your shoes. I saw cute flip flops for $2-$5 at walmart that would compliment a mud race worthy dress very well :)

    Ditto this.

If the dress code is so broad than a dress from anywhere would be fine.  And it sounds like cute and cheap flip flops would definitely be appropriate.  There is no way I would wear anything I cared about to that wedding.

I would also bring big hefty bags for the car ride home.  After muddy soccer games when my brothers and I were kids, my mom would have us jump into Hefty bags before getting into her car.  We were small enough (to a point) that she could tie them at the neck.

  • I agree with the PPs and recommend a change of clothes for the ride home!

  • Wow, that's...interesting.

Get something cheap. Go to someplace like H&M or forever21. In my experience, their dresses are *dirt* cheap and you can only wear their clothes once or twice anyway.

    Have fun.

  • I'd suggest you wear what feel comfortable or appropriate in for the wedding ceremony.  Surely that will come first, and hopefully any mud slinging will go on later, at the reception, giving you time to change into your "mud rastlin'" clothes, should you care to particiapate.

Might I suggest you slip into something more comfortable for the reception?  Perhaps something that leaves your arms and much of your legs bare.  It will make you more slippery in the event someone tries to "grabba hold o' you".  In case there is a challenge and prizes and such.
  • You can find cute stuff at a Goodwill or Salvation Army thrift store too. Much cheaper and still have cute clothes that you can trash.
