To pup or not to pup?

I love cats.  I've always been a cat person until I developed horrible, uncontrollable allergies to them.  My fi says he wants a dog, and I think I'm allergic to those, too, but not as bad.  I don't know if I want a  dog - I've never really had one (my family had one that died when I was quite young) and neither of us knows the first thing about training and caring for a dog.

My kids would go nuts for a dog, but I don't think they have any concept of the responsibilities that go with dog ownership (mostly because I dont, either).   I'm kind of done with being responsible for another being's poop, ya know?  On the other hand . . . two of my sisters just adopted The World's Cutest Puppies and I'm starting to cave.

What do you see as the advantages/disadvantages to having a dog?  What things should I be thinking about?  This would be a small dog because we have a tiny, tiny house.  We both work 40 hours a week, too.  is that fair to a dog?    Thanks for any advice/insights.
