NWR: Measuring for blinds

I asked this on the Decorating board on the Nest but didn't get any helpful responses.

I was measuring our windows  yesterday for roman shades, and I feel like this is stupid, but I can't figure out the sizing.  Has anyone measured for and bought blinds before?  Our windows are standard size, so I measured them and they were 34 3/4 but the blinds I want only come in either 31 or 35.  So I feel stumped.  Do I order them in 35 and just hope they squeeze into the window?  I dont' want to order the 31 and have gaps on each side.  They're going to be an inside mount, just like regular blinds.

I know I can custom order them but that just seems ridiculous because there are mini-blinds in the windows now and I know for sure that the people that flipped our house and sold it to us definitely didn't spend a bunch of money on custom fit blinds for those windows.

Any advice?

  • I'd call a professional.

Um, with all your crafting and sewing, have you thought of making your own roman blinds? My mom is working on a set for us right now, she said they're SUPER simple. Even I could do it, apparently. Even though I don't know how to thread a sewing machine, ha ha.

  • I know you can have traditional and plantation blinds cut to size, but I don't know about roman shades. I'd call the company and see if custom sizes are available, or if they can be cut to size. GL!
  • I know you're not going to like the response, but I'd call who(m?)ever you're buying them from.

I vaguely remember having a similar issue, and we called Home Depot and they told us what we needed.

Big surprise, I never get helpful responses (if at all) when I post on the nest. Where are you getting the blinds from, can they tell you where precisely to measure. I would assume ou would measure the inside measurements if it is not overhanging the trim, if it IS overhanging the trim, measure with it.
  • P2, I have thought about making them and I've seen some tutorials, but home decor fabric can be pricey and I have 7 windows to cover so I figured buying them would just be easier all around.

I'm planning to get them from JC Penney and they do have custom sizes but it costs twice as much per window.  Yeah, I guess I'll just have to call them and ask what they recommend.  Either that or just order one and see if it fits and if it does, then order the rest.

  • Did you measure the blinds or the inside of the window?

I measured the inside of the window.

  • The mini blinds are probably 34 inches, which is why they fit. (I'm guessing).

J says to special order to get that size. You can't find any you like in a 34?

All the ones I've found are 35...I don't think I can afford to custom order for that many windows.  Thanks for asking him!  I'll look again at Lowes and Home Depot just in case I missed some.

Can you possibly go to some smaller blind stores in your area? They might be able to work out a deal with you or have something they can rework to fit your needs?
  • I found some 34s at Macys online! I think.
  • Nebb, I'll have to see what's in my area.  I'm not really even sure what's around.

Sco, thanks I'll check out Macy's!

P2, I did some Google-ing and found two different ways to DIY roman shades.  One was using mini blinds as a guide (which we already have so that could work) and one was using little hooks and pulley which also looked pretty easy.  Do you know which kind your mom is doing?

If I can't find some locally or online that would work, maybe I'll do a test run on a window in my craft room and if it works out, DIY.

  • I would probably do that too Danieliza.

I still don't know what kind of blinds I want.  I don't want to break the bank, but I don't want to get cheap mini blinds either.  I want wooden.  Me thinks they might be pricey.  I haven't really shopped around though.  I did find the drapes I want from BB&B.  I need some drapes for my big bay kitchen window especially.
