Recommend a book for me

I'm traveling this weekend and want a new book or two to put on my kindle.  I hate searching for reviews online, so recommend a good book please.  I'm really into auto/biographies lately, but like anything from chick lit to mystery/thriller.  Thanks :]

Re: Recommend a book for me

  • Do you like Nicholas Sparks? Safe Haven by him is amazing.
  • I just finished reading The Help by Kathryn...Stocket (or something like that) and could NOT recommend it more.  It was a wonderful book.

    Also:

Dogs of Babel by Carolyn Parkhurst
Prep, Man of my Dreams or American Wife by Curtis Sittenfeld
The Hunger Games Trilogy by Suzanne Collins

  • If only I had my three bookshelves in front of me, damnit.  I know I'd have more recommendations.

  • The Devil in the White City... I heard it was being made into a movie and then checked it out, but was excited because it's about Chicago.

Lately I've also been reading books by Dennis Lehane - he does a lot of mystery/thriller.  A number of his books have also become movies - like Gone Baby Gone and Mystic River.
  • I've heard awesome things about "The Help"

I'm a music nerd - and my favorite book of all time is the autobiography of Motley Crue - it's called "The Dirt." Not sure if that's up your alley, but it's definitely an interesting read. See if you can find the first paragraph online somewhere and you'll know what I mean. It's dirty, but it's actually really interesting.

I do like Nick Sparks, I've actually been eyeing that one lately.  The Help looks good too, like top of my list good.  I'm borrowing Hunger Games from a friend over break.
  • I have recently become obsessed with "the girl with the dragon tattoo" and the two books that follow it.

  • Have you ever read Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer? Good book.

  • Ooooh I did like Devil in the White City.  I really love Chicago (I've only visited twice) and it was really interesting.  Although I did find myself flipping quickly through certain parts to get to the really interesting ones :)

I actually LOVE those movies, like all time favorites, so I'm sure I'd love the books too.
  • H and I have gotten in to Steve Hamilton lately - murder mysteries that take place in Michigan's U.P. They're pretty easy reads but he is an outstanding storyteller. There's 7-8 books (I think) surrounding the same character. I believe the first one is called A Cold Day in Paradise.

  • I also liked Committed by Elizabeth Gilbert (follow up to Eat, Pray, Love which I found a little smug).  It was less smug and a really neat read before our wedding.

  • Dennis Lehane is my favorite author.  I recommend any of his books that have Patrick Kenzie in them (Gone Baby Gone is amazing and the sequel just came out, Moonlight Mile) and/or Shutter Island.

Shopgirl by Steve Martin is one of my all time favorites and it's a fairly quick read.

  • Also - if you ever want a good short, quick, endearing read:  Gene Wilder (yes, THE Gene Wilder) has written some adorable novellas.  They are very sweet.

TR - I tried looking up to see if that castle is still standing but I guess it was torn down years ago.  Sinister, but interesting nonetheless.
  • Jen Lancaster if you want to laugh out loud.  Start with "Bitter is the New Black"

    Ditto. Loved it!
  • Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson. True story about an American guy trying to build schools in remote areas of Pakistan and Afghanistan. I don't know how exciting it sounds from that description, but it's a really interesting book.

I also love just about anything by Jodi Picoult.
  • The Beekeeper's Apprentice (can't remember the author, sorry) is really good. Basically the story of a retired Sherlock Holmes and his young sidekick - mystery, adventure, good stuff.
  • I just finished The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest (the 3rd to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), and those books were awesome.

If you're a Dexter fan (or even if you're not), the books that the show is based off are good (I've only read the first one--Darkly Dreaming Dexter).

If you like fantasy books at all, try the Dresden series by Jim Butcher--it's sort of Harry Potter for adults.
  • I'm going through all of these right now, thanks!
  • I also love the Janet Evanovich Stephanie Plum series. Funny, easy reading. Grandma is a hoot!

I agree with you. I am reading Eat, Pray, Love right now.
  • I very much enjoyed the biography of Mata Hari. It might be an idea ^_^
  • Die Trying by Lee Child (thanks, Fish, for getting me hooked). This is the 2nd in the Jack Reacher series.

Never Wave Goodbye by Doug Magee

    Both are available on Kindle.

    Also:
The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova (she wrote this before Black Swan) and
Strange Piece of Paradise by Terri Jentz - if you like true crime novels.

Both may be available on kindle - not sure, but I'm pretty sure both are in paperback.

I love you Missy. Even though you are not smart enough to take online quizzes to find out really important information. ~cew
  • Diana Gabaldon's "Outlander" and the rest of the series. I am actually reading the series for the third time because I love the story so much.

I love these books and they will keep you reading for ages! They are huge books and so addicting and now I think there are 6 of them. I've also read them about 3 times, all six books.

Ditto this.  The first one is called ONE FOR THE MONEY.  Very funny, and a good story too.
  • YES to the Hunger Games trilogy. OMG they're good. And Into Thin Air but its a heavy read.

    The Help
is pretty fantastic and if you're going to do Outlander, only take one. They definitely require breaks between books. The Forgotten Garden (Kate Morton) is pretty brilliant - slow going at first but omg it finishes fabulously and if you're at all predisposed to young adult, try out the Mortal Instruments trilogy (City of Bones, City of Ashes and City of Glass) by Cassandra Clare. Bill Bryson's new book is also, as usual, fabulous.
