hyperactive thyroid

Does anyone have hyperthyroidism? I was losing too much weight and hair, so I went to the doctors. After a blood test, they said my thryoid was out of wack. I don't get to see an endocrinologist for 2/3 weeks and I am very anxious.

Anyone have this? What did you do for it?

Re: hyperactive thyroid

  • I know a handful of people that have problems with their thyroid.  They have had to be put on medication to regulate it.  Sometimes it eventually corrects itself and you don't have to take medication any more.

At least you know what the problem is :)

I was diagnosed with hyperthyroid my junior year of high school.  I had rapid weight loss, anxiety, trouble concentrating, and difficulty breathing.  It took a few appointments to get to the bottom of it but the blood test revealed the crazy levels I had.  I did not go to a specialist, though.  My primary care dr. prescribed medication, which I took for about a year and a half, and I had regularly scheduled blood tests.  After that time frame my tests showed that my levels had normalized.  I haven't taken meds since, and have had no trouble.  I make sure to note it whenever I see a new dr. but other than that I'm done with it!
  • no specialist really? I wish that was me. She says I need to go to see "whats causing it" which is scary as helll if you google it!

  • WebMD has message boards, too. Just FYI.

  • KK, put down the Google.  Seriously.  Everything is always worse on WebMD.
  • Even Hashimoto's sounds worse online!  Seriously, stop with the self-diagnosing and wait for the tests.

Or...get a second opinion.  That's always a good idea too....

I don't get married often, but when I do, I do it in Las Vegas.

  • My entire family is hypothyroid except me. I get my blood tested every 6 months now for it, just as a precaution. I'm not as educated on hyperthyroidism, though.

I'm sure your doctor referred you to a specialist just to cover all bases. Lots of GPs treat thyroid issues on their own, as well. It's the equivalent of seeing a GP for your annual pap vs going to an OB/GYN for it. Both are qualified, one has more specific training in the field so you are well taken care of.

Try not to worry too much, and step away from the google!
