invitation wording help

Hi I had a quick question, hopefully it hasn't been asked a million times, if so I'm sorry!
I am working on the wording for my ivitation and I have read that if you are getting married in a church you word it
mr and mrs so and so request the honor of your presence...
and if not in a church it is
mr and mrs so and so request the pleasure of your company....

I pretty much really dislike the pleasure of your company wording, I don't know why, for some reason it rubs me wrong for our invites. My FI really dislikes honor of your presence and we are not getting married in a church so is there another way I can word it that is still pretty formal, (for brides family hosting)?

Thanks for any suggesstions!

Re: invitation wording help

  • I think you can word it any way you want.

  • I actually prefer the traditional wording, but if you Google for wedding invitation wording, you'll find all kinds of other options.

  • I thought it was more a matter of how formal the wedding is, rather than whether or not it's in a church. I agree that you can really word it how you want. I didn't like any of the traditional options and found our wording by searching google.

  • The rule you referenced is the old-time, traditional rule.

    These days, the rule is:

If you are having a religious/spiritual wedding - no matter WHERE, you can use HONOR / PRESENCE.

If you are having a non-religious wedding - no matter WHERE, you should use PLEASURE / COMPANY.

Reason:  The religious wedding is before God and the guests / witnesses you are inviting are for the honor and glory of the religious ceremony, and their presence will join God's presence for the ceremony.
On the other hand, guests invited to a non-religious ceremony are coming to share pleasure and company.
