H recently made a lateral move in his company so that he could be promoted. His former position was a dead end, so while the schedule was good, the pay was not, and there was no room for improvement in that area. He is now making the same amount of money he was, but with bonusing opportunities and the potential to be promoted and get a significant raise. The new position, unfortunately, is nights, which sucks since I work days. When I go back to work in September, he'll be leaving for work as I'm getting home, and I'll be asleep long before he gets home again.
The position above him opened up at another location. It would mean a 15 mile commute, but because of where it is that 15 miles would most likely be 45 minutes to an hour by car. Right now his commute is 30 minute by bicycle or 20 minutes by car. He does commute by bike when the weather is nice.
This promotion would not come with a pay raise, but would have bigger bonusing opportunities and would put him back on days. It would also mean he was just one step away from a promotion that would nearly double his salary.
I'm thinking at this point he should just apply, and then make a decision when and if the time comes, right?
