Do you guys ever drink Toohey beer? I was at an Australian bar (in San Diego) last weekend and they had it in bottles. It was not, however, a very good Australian bar since they didn't have any Australian beers on tap! And the bartenders were all American. Anyway, FI said it was his favorite when he was living in NZ, and that it is, in fact, Australian. It was pretty good!

  • aMr says: "Australia has a sh*t load of beers but the popularity of each depends on which state you're in."  He figures it's in Australias top 5.

  • Amoro, crook = "when you think your head is going to explode the next day, but that is after 18 or 20 cans"

I say, this is the number one reason to NEVER EVER go drinking with an Aussie.  I did and look what it got me!

p.s.  I'llnever have the answers to these questions becuase I don't drink beer.

What beers were you hoping to see there?

  • msmery, I bet the Aussie bar you went to was better than the "Outback, an Australian Bar" (yes, thats the name on the sign) that is down the street from us.  It's owned by Poms and run by the  French.

  • aMrs - I haven't seen "poms" used since I was in Oz 2 years ago. I had to ask my cousin wtf it meant while I was there because he referred to our grandmother as one!

  • Tooheys New is an ok beer, but most Toohey's is pretty gross, IMO!

That said, at least they weren't trying to give you XXXX or Victoria bitter! Those beers are pretty terrible.

It's funny how cultural bars always misrepresent culture! We saw ads for that Outback Steakhouse (or whatever it's called) when over in the states. A lot of their 'authentic' Australian foods aren't even what we'd ever consider eating here. I suppose it's much like all of the English Bars we have here, though, that sell Stella even though most people in the UK won't touch it. My BIL worked at an Australian bar in England and said a lot of what they sold was beer that most Australians wouldn't touch. Personally, I prefer imported beers.
  • gg, I guess he's starting to rub off on me.  We'll close our language gap, eventually.

    We had Tooheys New.

I don't know, GG, Foster? ;-) Just kidding. I'm not up to date on what beers they have in Australia. But I wasn't expecting Coors on tap! Which they had.

What's funny is that I used to work with a girl who was originally from Australia and she moved back to San Diego to help her family open a bar/restaurant. So this place might be it and might actually be run by Australians.

I think a good example is Chinese food in the US. Or fast food Mexican-style food. Both completely different than the real thing.

Frankly, I quite enjoy Belgian and German beers. And a lot of US microbrews, especially wheat beers and red ales.

Sun - When I studied in Oz, we'd go out and my friends would drink VB or Carlton. I don't like beer, but I tried both and Carlton was much better, IMO. When we first got to Oz (Cairns), we were at the bar and the bartender told us that he'd laugh in our face if we ordered a Foster's because that is NOT Australian beer. He had a few bottles on the bottom shelf just so that he could make fun of Americans who thought they were all cool ordering one. Haha.

  • Is Foster's really Australian for Beer?

  • TheSun, aMr says it's called XXXX (4x) becuase Queenslanders couldn't spell beer.  Is that true?  ;-)

  • So, in Mexico there's XX beer, and in Australia there's XXXX beer?  Interesting.  Australia must be sexier.

  • Hahaha, knowing the people who drink four-x, there's a high likelihood that his assertion is indeed correct, aMrs!

And gg, you might as well drink from the gutter; it probably tastes better than VB!

I am really not a fan of most Australian beers. H and I drink Asian imported beers, a few cervezas, as well as german beer.

Speaking of micro-brewery beer, when we were in Jackson Hole we went to Snake River and had some gorgeous beers there! They had great food too and it was such beautiful weather... sigh, why can I not be on holidays all of the time!

That would be so cool if you rode kangaroos to school!
