NWR stupid morning sickness questions, possible tmi

I'm only about 7 weeks so I haven't told a ton of people yet, but I have questions. I'm sorry if these are really stupid, duh questions.

1. What do I do if I get sick at work? The girls I share an office with know, so that's not a problem, but I'm so afraid someone will hear my vomiting in the bathroom and suggest I go home because I'm 'sick.' Thoughts?

2. What do I do if I have to need to vomit in the car? Usually, I can hold it down til I get home but I'm afraid it'll happen.

I'm not getting sick all the time, but on those occasions, I'm nervous.

Eta: I'm afraid of thebump. That's why I'm asking here.

  • Can you keep some crackers or ginger lollipops at work or in the car?
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

I keep crackers with me at work but I didn't think about the car. Most of the time, as long as I keep something in my stomach, I'm fine, but every once in a while, it makes it worse.
  • I would run the water in the sink for some sound privacy, but others will probably have better solutions.

This is super gross, but I get really bad motion sickness. When I was little, my parents would keep cheap tupperware in the car as my "barf bucket." The lid meant we didn't have to smell it on the way home.

  • Soda crackers, like Saltines, did the trick for me. Good luck!
  • I would recommend Preggie Pop Drops.  You can get them on Amazon or at Babies R Us.  They worked really well for all the nausea I experienced after surgery.

  • Try sea bands....they are little fabric bracelet things that seemed to help me.  Tupperware sounds like a good idea for the car.
I would guess that if anyone hears you getting sick in the ladies room, they probably won't say anything.

  • A friend of mine swore by peppermint for morning sickness, she kept candies everywhere!!

  • Morning sickness usually resolves by the 12th week of pregnacy. In the meantime, there are a few natural preventions and remedies you can try before getting a precription anti-nausea med from your ObGyn. A small bland meal in the morning may help. You should nix eggs, bacon, cinnamon rolls, danishes etc. just a few pieces of bread/biscuit/crackers may help. Angelface is right about the peppermint-peppermint oil generally helps with all types of nausea. A cup of ginger tea in the mornings may help, but some obgyns have reservations about ginger in pregnancy. If it becomes a real problem, talk to your Doc. Phernergan is first line for morning sickness of pregnancy. Others offered good advoce about puking in the bathroom. Also, could you just pull over to the side of the road and throw up?

  • Thank you everyone for your tips. The nausea really isn't that bad. It's more of a 'what if this happens?' On the way home today, I definitely figured I could just pull over if I needed too, as long as rush hour isn't too bad. That was a duh moment for me. Unfortunately with work is that the rumor mill around there is worse than high school. I wouldn't be surprised if people already knew.
  • I had HG while I was pregnant, which basically meant I was puking upwards of 10 times a day...every day. I eventually was put on a few different pills - Reglan, which made me crazy and I quit taking after two weeks, Phenergan, which helped a bit but made me very, very tired, and Zofran, which is the ONLY thing that kept me out of the hospital and off bedrest. On those pills, I threw up about 4 times a day for the rest of the nine months.

Honestly...I puked everywhere. When it was still early, I said I had food poisoning but I didn't need to go home and my boss (a guy) took my word for it. After everyone knew, they just helped me as best they could. I kept a trashcan next to my desk and threw up in that.

As for the car, whenever it was possible, I drove in the left lane so I could pull over and open the door. If that wasn't possible, I kept a bucket in the car and dumped it when I parked.

I lost 30 pounds my first trimester and I mostly drank Ensure shakes and Gatorade throughout the whole time. I was admitted a few times for dehydration.

None of the normal remedies worked for me, but I've heard good things about small meals, bland meals, ginger, peppermint, and the preggy pops. If nothing else, the Preggy Pops are good for when you have dry mouth.

  • I have never been pregnant but a few years ago I had the absolute WORST cough ever. I would cough so hard it made me vomit. I commute 50 min. to and from work so it was a big concern for me until the cough medicine finally worked. If I got into a coughing fit and it was making me gag, I would pull off, preferably onto a residential street and not the side of the highway, open the door and vomit. I know that sounds awful and gross but I did NOT want that in my car.

[QUOTE]Actually, I do have some morning sickness advice. In a lot of cultures women take small clay tablets to fight morning sickness. A natural food store might have them. The clay binds any toxins lots of plants make compounds to discourage herbivory, usually they don't bother us, but pregnant ladies are sensitive which reduces the nausea. We leaned it in a chemistry class. Double check with your doctor, especially if you are on medication, wouldn't want the clay to bind that too!

Redmond Trading Company sells little clay capsules. They are under a couple different names (like Detox or Stomach Health), but they are all just straight clay in a capsul. Amazon has 120 capsules for less than $10. They really help when I get stomach aches.

[QUOTE]I've never been pregnant, but I do get killer migraines that cause nausea, and in general have a very sensitive stomach. I have had to use a bowl in the car multiple times. When I have to throw up at work, I run water and flush the toilet over and over to disguise the sound as much as I can. I also turn on the fan.

I don't know how you feel about caffeine and pregnancy, but regular Coke helps me immensely. I've never tried caffeine free regular coke, but it may work just as well. I sip it slowly at first and usually by the time I reach the end of the bottle, I feel TONS better.

Caffeine is a great treatment for headaches. Excedrin and Excedrin Migraine just have Acetaminophen (Tylenol), Aspirin and Caffeine. Pregnant women shpuld avoid caffeine as much as possible and should not have more than 150mg/day max.

Oddly enough, sipping and sucking actions have been shown to help relieve nausea- althohh the physiology behjnd it remains uncertain......

  • O im sorry you're not feeling good! It gets better I was the happiest I've ever been in my second trimester. But ya I wouldn't do caffeine on a regular basis. My morning sickness wasn't really anything but gingers great and crackers to. Also tums will become a lifesaver.
  • I second the Preggie Pop Drops recommendation.  I found that salty foods helped a little, and so did apple slices with peanut butter.

If you're sick at work (I had that problem, too), I would run water while you're in the bathroom.  I had awful morning sickness through 15 weeks, and by 12 weeks I just didn't care who knew I was sick.  Hopefully yours will stay mild! :)

I have an appointment with my OB next week. Thanks for everyone's suggestions. I'll talk with her about some solutions.

Excited for my first ultrasound though.
  • lurker here to weigh in...
i have never been pregnant, but i get very sick from anesthesia. when i had surgery the last couple times, i brought these for the car ride home from the hospital. if you're into that sort of thing, they also have fancy patterned bags, but i was all about utility.
