Nebb / Garden people

Do you compost at all? I was reading a bit about it today and it looks interesting, but I'm not sure how realistic it is in a neighborhood setting.

I dont technically, but my city has a compost program where they pick up a green bin of kitchen/compostable waste. We throw a lot of stuff out that way, but we dont actually compost here at the house.
• I do! I keep what amounts to a scrap bucket. Anything that decomposes I put in there: fruit rinds, egg shells, coffee grounds, food scraps, whatever. My brother brought me home a five gallon bucket from his job and I keep it in our shed so animals can't get to it.

not the best way to integrate with your neighbors.

I have seen these really neat composting containers, where it rolls on a stand, so that you can mix it easily. I think in order for it to compost properly you have to mix it.
• Lol, I've read (but not experienced) that as long as you keep it to green and brown compost and make sure no meats or dairy goes in it doesn't smell badly. We'll be in Winchester so a bit more countrified, but still in a fairly wealthy subdivision.

Dh is not at all excited about the idea of compost piles/bins or rain barrels, so I'll have to convince him eventually.
• I don't compost because it's a wild-life attractor. I don't like skunks and racoons in my yard...even in a container.

I love our rain barrell, it fills up SO quickly and its not far from my garden so if I can I will water from there. Why doesnt he like the idea of them?
• He thinks they will look tacky and we'll be "those" neighbors. I still have a little bit of city to beat out of him.

I don't know that you are that far out. It will only be "country" for a few more years.

H keeps trying to beat the city out of me, and well that's just never going to happen.

• Exactly! I think he pictures them as these crazy broken down plastic buckets or something, but they have some really tasteful ones lately. I also need to figure out a rig to empty my fish tank water into my gardens...

This. We had one for a while, but it attracted possums, raccoons, and groundhogs. And the groundhog ate all of our green beans. Not good. We're not even out in the country. I had no idea we had any of those animals in our neighborhood.

Hmmm lemmie show you mine.

I dont think its unsightly or anything. Its in good condition because we pull it in during the winter so it doesnt freeze and crack.
• I will fight for my little piece of country...actually the location is really great. It's right on the edge of the middle neighborhood and the upper, with the backyard going into a small ravine so no development over there.
