My wedding is March 1st 2014. I know a long time away....I want to know when is it okay to start trying on dresses? Advice please...

  • Whenever you want really. I got engaged September 18, 2010 and wasn't married until June 9, 2012. I found my dress in November(ish) of 2010 and never looked back. I loved it even more every single time I put it on.

You may not find it that early. Don't put any pressure on yourself if you do decide to go soon. You'll have plenty of time!

There's no rule to this, but I would try to wait. I've heard girls on here who bought their dresses early say they wish they hadn't because their tastes changed. Even a lot of the decor ideas I had two years ago are different than what I like and chose now.

  • The dress shop I've talked to said about 6-8 months before your wedding is best, that way there is time for alterations, etc. Some stores may vary. If you have a specific shop in mind, you may want to check with them or check their website.

  • I would maybe wait until around the one-month mark for the reasons aragx listed. What I thought a few years ago I wanted in a wedding dress, I didn't want that anymore when I actually started looking seriously for dresses before my wedding. Plus new dresses will keep coming out and a new style might come out closer to the wedding that you just love.

  • I chose and bought mine in April 2012 and my wedding isn't until July 2013. I'm not worried about falling in love with another dress because I am super-duper sure that I've bought the perfect dress. Even when I skim through magazines or blogs, I still don't see a single dress that I like better than mine. :-)

I would suggest shopping early - your wedding dress will inform (though not dictate) many of your other wedding style choices. For example, if you choose a lace gown, you might want to carry on that theme in other areas, such as invites, the cake, or table decor.
  • There are a few risks if you buy your dress too early. Styles will change, your tastes may change, your weight may fluctuate. The dress could be soiled or stretched hanging in the back of your closet season after season. It also might bother you to see the dress you paid full price for potentially sitting on a sale rack before you're even married.

I ordered my dress about three months before my wedding date. I had three fittings and plenty of time for alterations. Good luck!
