Help me not look like a prostitute

My mother gave me a Tarte makeup kit for Christmas. It's full of eye shadow, lip gloss, blush, shimmering powder and bronzer.

I'm not the girliest of girls, and I'm only used to wearing (at most) eye shadow, lip gloss, foundation, mascara and blush. Anything beyond that leaves me confused.

WTF is shimmering powder? What am I supposed to do with it? And the bronzer? Is that something my pasty Norwegian self should ignore?

Re: Help me not look like a prostitute

  • Hmm I'm no help.  The last time I wore make up was in middle school and I had gold glitter eye liner that I wore. Ouch.

There are some youtube people out there that have videos showing you how to do the smoky eye and stuff, so maybe check that out because sometimes seeing is better than explaining.
  • Be careful with bronzer.  I use it (I'm a fair Norwegian too :)) but only to put a TISH of color on my pale face.  If you get carried away with it you can look orange, and weird.  Just use a little, and put a little on your neck and chest too.  I think it makes me look healthier.

Experiment with your eyeshadows.  Put the darker colors on the crease of your eyes, the medium shades over your lids and blend a little with the darker colors, and put the lighter colors just under your brow.  Use like colors together.

Shimmering powder?  Lol.  No clue.  I'd probably only dust my chest and arms with it at a dressy occasion, but even that might be a little weird.

I think that makes sense, Rach. I'm assuming I'm not supposed to wear blush, bronzer and shimmering powder at the same time?

For reference, my daily routine involves washing my face and moisturizing. On occasion, I wear the other stuff, but it's not too frequently.

ETA: The kit came with an instruction sheet for three different eye looks. I've got that part down. It didn't come with any indication on what to do with the other stuff.
  • I use shimmer powder when I go out. I put just a little under my eyebrows and a dab on the inner corner of my eyes.

  • The shimmer powder might be fun to use as eyeshadow?  I dunno.

  • I'm very pale, so I only use bronzer sparingly. Usually the kind that comes in kits like that are too dark for me, so if it's not a good shade on you just skip it :)

As far as shimmering powder, I'm guessing it's not super glittery...you can use it on your cheekbones just above where you'd put blush to make your cheekbones stand out. Also can be used as an eyeshadow/brow bone highlighter if you'd like!
  • My skin is very, very pale.  I used to use a bit of bronzer, but only in the summer when I could pretend I had a little color.  It was mostly just freckles, but I can pretend that's color, right?

  • Thanks, ladies. I have a feeling I'll be experimenting tonight. H is out of town, so he can't laugh at me.
  • I'm super pale and I use bronzer very lightly to contour my face... a little in the hollows of my cheeks (below where you'd put blush) and then a *very* little bit wherever the sun would touch - forehead, nose, chin.

But I have to be really careful because more than a VERY light swipe and I look like I got attacked by a spray tan and lost.

  • Shimmering powder is to give you a dewy look. Don't use it in your t-zone though, or you'll look oily. You can also use the bronzer as a blush to give your cheekbones definition.

  • I personally don't use shimmering powder much, if at all, because I have oily skin and I dont need my face to shine any more than it does :)

My Mary Kay lady taught me the trick of using bronzer as a blush.
  • My skin is super dry. I imagine the shimmering stuff would help a little.
  • Special, you could never look like a prostitute!
  • I do the "3" thing with my bronzer too, but usually only when I'm going out at night, not during normal days.

I have shimmering powder that I pretty much never use.  I think my sister uses a little under her eyes to make them look brighter?

  • Bronzer needs a very, very light hand.  I use Bare Minerals and I really tap out the brush first and then do one light and quick sweep across the forehead and on both cheeks.  It's definitely not supposed to be noticeable but a very subtle touch of sun.  A thing of bronzer will last forever.

  • I have some Bare Minerals warmth and haven't mastered it yet. I haven't been able to put it on without having a huge dark spot. :(
