Humor me

Because it's a Saturday, and really, what else do you have to do?

For those of you who have tattoos or would consider a tattoo:

Would you ever consider getting a tattoo with your H? Not necessarily a name or even matching, just something that maybe represents the other person or your relationship. H and I had a discussion about this after seeing a couple with matching tattoos at the grocery store.

Re: Humor me

  • If that's what you want, go for it.
  • We talked about it, but I don't know that we will actually go through with it.

  • Heck, if I did something that represented Mr B, I would end up with a ninjafied version of rock-paper-scissors-lizard-Spock.  Oh, and Spock would actually look like Errol Flynn's version of Robin Hood.

  • I have been thinking about it but I was thinking of getting one kind of for him but not making him get one. I want to get as bee. My married last name starts with a B and I get Mrs. B all the time. Together I wanted to get peanut butter and jelly tattoos. Not sure though.

I would consider a bumblebee, too.  Well, for the same reasons.  =-)  My classroom even has a bumblee theme.

  • These two had interlocking hearts. Not really my think, but I kind of liked the idea of it. Just having another little reminder is kind of a sweet thought.

That sounds cute. I wanted to do a bee wedding but I don't like black for weddings. I am thinking for the distant future nursery but I don' th know about black in a nursery.

<div>You should get something personal if that's what you want. My first tattoo is on my right hip. It's a tattoo of the sapphire claddagh ring H gave me on our first dating anniversary. My second tattoo on my left side is a union jack butterfly on a branch. The union jack butterfly represents H - since he's British. </div>
  • I wouldn't mind getting tattoos together as in at the same time, but I don't know that I would want anything that represented the other person. I definitely wouldn't want to get something that matched. I don't have a tattoo yet but I've considered it. I just haven't thought of anything that I want enough or means enough to put it on my body permanently.

That being said, I wouldn't think it was weird if others chose to do that. I think it can be sweet.

Ditto. Also, I want to get mine on my shoulder. If I get it before a wedding I am in, do I ask/tell the bride?

  • Edie, cute!
  • I wouldn't do H's name, and I know he wouldn't do mine.  We both just think name tattoos are dumb, regardless of whose names they are.  But if I did get another one I would probably do one that represented him or us.  Like an anchor because obviously that a big part of our lives, and no matter what happens it will always be important.  H could easily end up with the same tattoo or similar.

  • FI has no interest in getting one. I keep thinking about it, and may do it, but the one I want isn't symbolic of FI really at all. I hate pain though, so I probably won't.

  • H and I had this discussion before and both whole-heartedly agree that we would never get tattoos associated with one another. We are too cynical.

My dad got one with his ex-wife's name and now he has a huge coverup. We'd both like to avoid that, if things ever went south with our relationship.
  • I have one, it's a flame/fireball on my lower abdomen. And I assure you it's not biker flames, it's black and white and it looks as close to actual fire as one can draw. I got it because H is a firefighter and has been the whole time I've known him. I got it when I was 19 and didn't want his name or anything like that for obvious reasons. Then a year or two later I was going through a rough time and so added another tattoo next to it: "you call it hope - that fire of fire! it is but agony of desire." from Poe's Tamerlane. H does not have any tattoos though, he's been saying since I met him that he wants one but he's never gone through with it. It would have to do with firefighting though, nothing to do with me.
  • I wouldn't get anything associated with my (non-existant) H. I'm glad I never did when I was married, because it would be a constant painful reminder.

I do think that it is cute on some people, but names are a no-go for me. Kids, sure. H/BF/SO, no way Jose.

<div>The way I saw it, the tattoos would remind me of H anyways if we ever did split up. He isn't a big tattoo guy, but he likes mine because he thinks they're sexy and not over the top. The reason I wouldn't get his name/our wedding date is because it would likely bother anyone I date afterwards. I've grown to love my tattoos, and while I originally got them because they each symbolize something to do with H I don't think I'd regret them if we split up. </div>

Yeah, even if it was something that didn't necessarily <em>look</em> like it was associated with us, I'd still know. But, I'd probably regret them. They might bother someone else, but ultimately it would be about how I felt, and I don't want to regret a tattoo (I'm a major grudge holder though, so it would be hard to see it and not be upset).

All this talk is making me really want to get my next one. I'm thinking I might go this weekend if I can convince H to go with me. I've been dragging on it because I know it's going to hurt like hell (on my foot).

It's a quote from Peter Pan (original book, not movie) - "To live would be an awfully big adventure"

It's not a sentiment I've always felt and I've always struggled with some things, so it's kind of like my own personal reminder to look forward and face the world head-on with a smile. And I am slightly obsessed with Peter Pan, the idea of never growing up, always having child-like excitement in daily life, imagination, etc.

I think I'm just freaking myself out. I did it with my other two as well.
  • I like that quote, Sesh.
