STD's are not required. If you plan on having a lot of out of town guests or are having a destination wedding, they can be helpful for people to plan ahead.

We did not do STD's.

Completely optional, but could be useful if you are getting married on a holiday weekend or having a destination wedding.

We made some for our out of town guests.  We made them in Photoshop and then printed them out at Costco.  (total came to about $4 (yes, $4) for printing - it was on photo paper, but we didn't care, we just wanted to make them as cheaply as possible)
