Hair

I recently had a HUGE hair dye mishap that forced me to cut my hair 2-4 inches from my scalp. I'm not a huge fan of the haircut to say the least. Do any of those hair growth pills, shampoos etc. work? The Folicure brand that Sally's sells has good reviews but i wanted to check here too.

TIA!!

Re: Hair

  • Please explain what you did to yourself to result in having to cut all of your hair off?
  • No, those things don't work. It's like hair removal products and penile enhancement products: if there was one out there that really worked and caused no pain, wouldn't we ALL be doing it? (Well, not the penile thing, because most of us don't have them, but you get what I mean.)

I agree with Nebb. We need details.

  • oopsie.  well yes, extensions is the answer.  there is nothing medically that will make your hair grow faster.
  • I overbleached my hair. My natural hair color is a medium brown and I had a few of those big chunk highlights, which processed WAY earlier than the rest of my hair. I left the bleach on for about 45 minutes, and my brown hair only lightened to a dirty blonde but the highlighted parts got destroyed. They were super thin and, well, rubbery is a good way to describe it.

I used leave in conditioners, hot oil treatments, etc. My hair kept getting worse because apparently Mane and Tales shampoo kills chemically treated hair (I asked the girls at Sallys if it was OK to use and they said yes) My hair got really dry and straw-like, but not how a lot of people say it feels like straw.. i grew up on a farm it literally felt like thin straw, complete with kinks and twisted not curls.

I knew my hair was at a point were I could repair it but it would never get healthy. I decided I would rather have my hair grow out healthy than have half be healthy and half sh!tty.

All of that because I wanted to dye my hair lavender to cosplay Tsukasa from Lucky Star for Ohayocon =(

I am not looking for a miracle grow for hair. I know that is unrealistic but anything is better than nothing. Like a jump from a half inch a month to an inch or even 3/4s would be nice.

  • I tried hair extensions and they ripped a lot of my hair out.
  • I'm afraid you've just got to wait it out if hair extensions aren't going to work. With a year and a half to go, your hair will probably be long enough that you can have it pinned back on the day and use clip in hairpieces if you really wanted.
  • I'm working on strengthening my hair because even though I have a lot of it, it's really fine.  I've been taking prenatal vitamins, a fish oil supplement, and Biotin (available in the vitamin aisle) and my hair does seem to look and feel better since then.  It won't make it look perfect right away, but it will help make it healthier and stronger after all the damage the color did.

  • I a year and a half your hair will grow about 9 inches.  That is long enough to have a reasonable amount of hair.  I'd make sure that you don't style and fry it.  Leave it as virgin as possible to maintain the condition as much as possible.

  • I did this exact same thing...kind of. I went from bleached blonde, to jet black---and realized I had overdone it. So, I cut it all off. And I kept cutting it---until all the black hair was gone, and all the was left was my natural hair.

This was in July of '08. I have gotten my hair trimmed 3 times, and cut once---but it's down to my shoulders now. So, that was a year and a half ago---you'll be fine.

  • I haven't read all the responses, but hair weaves, extensions and/or wigs would remedy this situation.
  • I'm not that concerned with my hair for the wedding because I usually keep it short by most people's standards anyways. I was just hopeful that $10 a month would be a cheap investment with at least minimal results.
  • I got some GNC hair/skin/nail vitamins from drugstore.com. They had good reviews. I just started remembering to take them so I can't say what effect they've had, but hey, better than nothing I guess!

  • Massage your scalp, gets blood flow going and can help to stimulate growth.  It won't be drastic though.  You'll get maybe an extra 1/4" every 6 weeks.

And please, everyone take this as a lesson:  NEVER LIGHTEN HAIR AT HOME.  Going darker is not usually problematic, but I have never known anyone to bleach their own hair and get a good result.  Yikes.
