Tacky or Not?

So my family and my fiance's family think we should use plastic plates and plastic utensils for our reception. Our reception is offsite, so we're bringing in a caterer, but we do have to cover our own plates, cups, etc. It's not going to be a super formal reception, but I just fear that plastic is tacky for such an important event, not to mention, it's not very environmentally friendly at all. Any thoughts about this?

  • hey.  i tried msging you on another post - but it didn't work.  You are getting married at Ruby's Garden correct?  Not sure if you have found a photographer, but Black Hills Portraits are wonderful in Spearfish.  They are doing my wedding in May.  I would highly recommend them.  Let me know if you would like their contact info/website and I can get it for you.  I think it's ok to use paper/plastic.  Who are you going with for catering?  I haven't found one yet! Thanks!my e-mail is sheila0629@hotmail.com if you would rather e-mail me there.
  • Try looking for really high-quality disposible paper plates, cups, etc if you're more concerned about appearance; go for 100% biodegradable if you're more concerned about the waste factor (unfortunately, I haven't yet found a really nice, 100% biodegradable line yet).

If you're trying to save money, though, sometimes renting china can be cheaper than getting high-quality or biodegradable stuff. I'm still debating the china vs disposible for my off-site ceremony/reception too! There's something nice about just tossing all of the messy plates, etc, in the garbage!

  • I don't think it's tacky.

  • I think you can get high quality plastic plates/silverware that would be fine for the reception. I know other knotties have done it (just can't remember who) and it looked fine.
