I don't know who to be mad at...

-My husband's coworker for letting his 3.5 lb chihuahua slip out the gate. -The neighbors pit bull who bit him. -The ASPCA who told him to wait until the morning so the emergency vet bill wouldn't be so high. He was bleeding but appeared stable. (My dog would have been at ER vet immediately) -The coworker for calling his dog out of the cage the next morning (my dog would have been in my bed where I could monitor his every move and noise), and when he called him, he took 5 steps towards him and fell over and died. -The coworkers wife who is "so distraught" she gave their other chihuahua to a close friend because it hurt her too much to think about what happened to Kobe.

  • What owner in their right mind would wait? I don't even really buy that a vet would give that advice to begin with...
  • I guess the bleeding had little outside bleeding. It must have been a single bite. But a 3.5 pound chihuahua obviously has a large capacity for internal damage. If ASPCA said it, shame on them for giving phone advice. If the couple just pretended to get advice, then they don't need those dogs. Good the other one now has a new owner. I'm trying not to even get into the pitbull thing because the humans were the worst in this scenario, but does anyone ever get killed or disfigured by a chihuahua, maltese, yorkie, lab, pug, etc.

  • Hmm I would be very surprised if they did give out that advice. Any vet would tell you that the risk for internal damange is such that they would need to be seen. Unless they completely downplayed the incident, I can't see why they would be given that advice... and given that they gave their other dog away and cited costs of the e-vet, I get a feeling that perhaps they couldn't afford the e-vet treatment.
  • Wow. That disgusts me.I can see how the dog slipping out of the gate could have been an accident. It's happened to me a few times with our 100 pound German Shepherd (she only get a few steps because I'm quick). However, not taking the dog to the vet immediately is just beyond comprehension. That poor little thing loved his people and they just went to bed and let him die. That sickens me.
  • Oh God. Some people don't deserve to have pets.

  • That is all very sad.  :(

  • That is horrible! I think ultimately it is the chihuahua owners fault (not for the dog slipping out) but for being negligent and not getting his dog immediate medical attention! That is just letting your animal suffer needlessly! If anything they could have had him euthanized...would have been a lot more humane! And I am sorry but if that coworkers wife is so "distraught" why didn't she INSIST on taking the dog to the animal hospital??? There is simply not enuff man power in the world to keep me from taking my dog to the vet if they need it! Such a sad and dumb outcome...it could have gone such another way...sorry that you have to be involved in that situation.
  • That's all human error. It's not the chihuahua's fault for getting out (it happens), it's not the pit bull's fault for biting him (it happens, with ALL dogs).Shame on the humans for not having better control of their dogs, and shame on the coworker for not taking his dog to the vet immediately. Now the poor pit will probably be put down too :(

  • That is horrible.  I am SHOCKED that the ASPCA would give anyone that advice.  Seriously, I can't belive that*.  *I believe you...
  • I can't beleive the ASPCA would say that.  I would have called the emergency vet directly.  Actually, I wouldn't have called anyone, I would have just taken my dog directly in, I don't care about the costs, and I have 30 bucks to my name right now!
  • When we were younger, a neighbor kid got bitten in the face by a lab.  Ended up with a huge scar.  So yes, other dogs do disfigure and kill people.  10 years ago we would be having this discussion about doberman's, now nobody worries about them.  Pitbulls are like any other dog - if you train them well, they will be good dogs.  If you train them to be aggressive, then they will be aggressive.

This really breaks my heart for the little dog. I have a Yorkie, and there is no way in hell I wouldn't take him to the emergency vet asap. Small bite or not, it doesn't take much to hurt little dogs, especially a whopping 3.5 lb little guy.
