Save the dates and blocking off hotel rooms

Good Morning!Our date is June of 2010...when is it appropriate to send out "save the dates"?Also, majority of our guests are out of towners, is it ever too soon to go ahead and block off rooms?  Any info would be great!  We plan on blocking off rooms at one of the nicer hotels in the area but there are also several others that are close.Thanks in advance!

I wouldn't try to block rooms just yet.  Wait until a few months before.  Also... since you have 11 months for the wedding, I'd hold off on the STD's for another couple of months.  You never know who you might decide you don't want at the wedding!  Do you have your venue, etc already set?  One thing we've seen a lot on the boards is people send out STD's and then either can't afford/don't want/venue isn't big enough/etc. people there.  Just something to think about.

You could send the save the dates from now all the way up to about 6 months before the wedding.If you think that rooms will book up fast at the hotel you want, go ahead and get the block of rooms.  There's no harm in getting them early.

I'm June 2010 as well. We will be sending our STDs out in a few weeks because 95% of the wedding will be traveling from out of town.  I don't think we are going to block the rooms at the hotel though until 6 months out.  When we asked them, they suggested since they will only hold the block for a certain amount of time and if people miss the window they don't get the special rate to wait closer to the date.  So, we're waiting.  But I don't think it's a hotel that is in high demand.

Im July 2010 and called around to hotels last week to get some info/rates/etc.  They all assured me it was definitely not too early. On the July board, most girls are sending their STDs anywhere between August and Xmas

i'd say 6 mos is plenty of time

I got married in June and sent my STDs in January.   I think I blocked rooms around this time last year.  It is never too early for room reservations!

Go ahead and call the hotel now and get their policy on blocking rooms.  If they'll take the block now, there's really no reason to wait.  When we went to block 6 months in advance, our first choice hotel already had 3 blocks for our weekend, and we had to go with a second choice.
