Lamest question of the day

I was inspired by Sucrets vows in her bio (inspired by Larissa and Shanwalk) - when should we start thinking about vows? The task seems overwhelming and I don't even feel like starting. But we also want the ceremony to be really personal, blah, blah, clique phrase, clique phrase, blah. Thoughts?

Re: Lamest question of the day

  • We wrote the ceremony about 4 months out. We aren't doing personalized vows. We decided that writing our love letters was enough of a task. Plus, we both really liked the vows we found.

  • It took us 8 months to find our vows. We had them ready 2 months before the wedding. I think as long as you have them ready before you go over them with the person marrying you, you should be fine.

  • Ok, so it's not pressing that we start working hard on them 8 months out then. I'll just start perusing and getting ideas, jotting down thoughts. Thanks!

  • We're going the lazy route since I don't think I have seen it done it years. Do you (name) take (name) to be your lawful wedded wife/husband? (each responds, "I do.") Will you love, respect and honor her/him throughout your years together? (each responds, "I will.")
  • Champagne, I really like that idea. It seems very sweet and personal. And probably easier to get through than trying to remember your vows AND think about things to keep you from crying all your makeup off.

  • Yeah, Anna, it's funny because THOSE vows are probably really rare these days. Everyone was trying so hard to avoid them that now they're probably REALLY unique! And they're simple, straightforward and not lacking in sweetness at all. :) I also like that as well.

  • I totally stole vow ideas from sucrets and shan too. We aren't writing our own per se, more just combining some things we like from a few different places. I had them done a couple months ago for our original Oct. 24 wedding date.

  • our officiant was the one that wanted to finalize our ceremony.  probably about 3 weeks out we had to email it to him to "approve".
  • Awww... champagne, that's totally going to be me. Sappy sapperton.

  • Even if you write your own, you don't necessarily have to remember them. You could write them down. Trying to remember them  would totally stress me out - I think that's part of why that idea wasn't appealing to either of us. Or you could write a set of vows you each say and have your officiant say them for you to repeat. They're still your vows, but you don't have to worry about memorizing them.

  • Vows were tough for me - I'm glad I found the vows I did, because I still don't think we could have come up with something better. "you are my best friend. Today I give myself to you in marriage. I promise to encourage and inspire you, to laugh with you, and to comfort you in times of sorrow and struggle. I promise to love you in good times and in bad, when life seems easy and when it seems hard, when our love is simple, and when it is an effort. I promise to cherish you, and to always hold you in highest regard. These things I give to you today, and all the days of our life."

  • shannon - DH and used the same vows.  I wrote them up (my version with his name, his version with my name) on one small sheet of paper.  When it was times for vows, he pulled it out of his pocket and read them, then handed it to me - and I read them to him.  Then, he put it back in his pocket and we've kept them.  I have plans to frame them... but haven't gotten there yet.
  • Reading everybody's vows just made me cry.  I still need to write mine.  13 days left to do it.
  • Julez - zomg, 13 days??  Really??  Yaaaay!I had no desire to write any...neither DH or I are good with words, so I loved using something gorgeous that someone else wrote.

  • Yes, 13 days.  I've written one vow.  And now I'm all blubbery at work where I'm totally alone finishing a stupid project that has to get done before I can leave to get all married and stuff.
  • Aw, julez...get it done so you can focus on wedding goodness!  I admire anyone who writes their own vows.  Mine would be so lame.

  • We used the traditional vows suggested for the Catholic ceremony.  I actually loved them. Simple and exactly how I felt, plus we were lazy too :)

  • We are using the traditional vows.  Honestly, we really love that these are basically the same vows that our parents and grandparents have taken.  If it's good enough for them, it's good enough for us.  If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

  • I think it's hilarious that no one noticed that shannon wrote "clique" instead of "cliche." haha
