Yaz, anyone have any info about a possible recall?

I started seeing all the lawsuit commercials, and they haven't recalled it yet, but I'm finding some pretty scary stuff out there.  The FDA doesn't really say much though....I know I'm not planning on taking it again...I stopped 3 months ago cause it made me feel so awful all the time.

Re: Yaz, anyone have any info about a possible recall?

  • I quit yaz because it was expensive and wasn't doing what i had been promised by the advertising.  :)  That is scary... ::off to Google::

  • Well they have that new commerical with the chick who says "the FDA wanted us to clear up a few things"  that right there is a red flag to me!
  • This is really bad.  I take Yaz.  Guess I need to talk to the doctor...!
  • Wait, what about Ocella? Link, please?

  • IDK, but most of the effects seem to be vascular related with some things affecting kidneys and galbladder.  Its very scary since I did take it for probably 2 years....I stopped about 3 months ago for several reasons, but now I'm going back over the side effets and wondering if I should go have a full workup to be sure there is no lasting effects or damage.  Not that I would ever take part in a lawsuit, but I can't imagine if I had lost a loved one because a drug company pushed drs to over-prescribed a birth control.  This is exactly why drugs scare me and I hate taking them....even OCT stuff.
  • I would definitely check with your doctor.   I know someone who did advertising the company that makes Yaz and they had to review the side effects.  He said they were absolutely horrible.
  • Yaz made me completely insane. I had horrible mood swings and it totally sapped my sex drive. That is scary!
  • Oh, FFS.  The commercial where they "clear things up" is because Yaz isn't supposed to be used just to treat PMDD.  Its intended purpose is contraception.  Treating PMDD symptoms is a secondary purpose, and that's what the commercial was for.  To say if you were already planning on using the pill for contraception and you have PMDD Yaz is a good choice.  Make sense? And if the FDA isn't saying you should stop taking it, you're probably just fine.  Yes, birth control pills can cause DVT, stroke, and the like.  That is a potential complication of ANY BCP.  Made worse if you're over the age of 35, a smoker, or overweight.

  • Eh, I gained a lot of weight while taking Yaz.  I was hungry all.the.time, no matter how much I ate.  Once I quit taking it, my appetite was back to normal.  It was bizarre.
  • But this isn't new information.  It's always been in the commercials, and in the patient lit.  You really should read that stuff.  It's recommended if you're on Yaz to have your potassium levels checked periodically.

  • The same negative stuff came out about Orthro Evra, the patch....so I got off that.  But that was worse, it had higher doses.
  • What?  you want me to read what comes with my prescriptions?

  • I know it's crazy, Moose, and doesn't make any sense logically.  I don't know what I was thinking.

  • Yes, LovetheBeach, in that case they probably should have mentioned it.  But your doctor doesn't have the literature.  It comes in the little box your Yaz pills come in every month.  And you can also find it online at the Yaz site.  For future reference.  It's never a bad idea to call your doctor or pharmacist in your case to inquire.

  • Well that's fair enough.  What I just read on the website says something about increased potassium levels could cause short and long term health problems.  There's probably a number of things and they likely aren't required by law to name each one.  But it's good that you read your information--and you obviously understand it's important to make sure your doctor knows what else is going on with you.  In this case I'd call your doctor or pharmacist to see if it's safe for you to continue taking it.  Sorry, I didn't mean to turn this into a big old argument about verbiage.  So many people don't read this patient information and are shocked to hear things like this.  They freak out when they hear one medication might cause things that are a common side effect, ya know?

  • But J, I don't even *have* a gallbladder!  Does this mean the pill will spontaneously cause mine to grow back!? :D hehehe
  • Oh, Amoro, you're in a world and a half of trouble ;)

  • Even though DVT, stroke, and heart attack are side effects of every BCP, the new generation of birth control pills (including Yaz and Yasmin) carry a higher clotting risk. I don't take any hormonal birth control anymore because a year ago I was hospitalized for blood clots in my lungs. The doctors said they were surprised I was still alive when I walked into the ER. I found out that I have a genetic clotting disorder and the pill just pushed my body over the edge. The clotting disorder I have is actually pretty common, a little under 10% of all Americans have it and they think there's many more that just don't know.
  • Just an FYI: I have a really good friend who was taking Yaz and was just hospitalized for blood clots in her lungs and her doctors are almost 100% sure it was because of the Yaz. If I were on it, I would be finding a new pill fast.

  • Oh, I was thinking you meant something else. I've read that. It says: YAZ contains drsp®, a different kind of hormone that for some may increase potassium too much. Therefore, you should not take YAZ if you have kidney, liver, or adrenal disease because this could cause serious heart and health problems.  It doesnt state that higher potassium levels can cause hyperkalemia. Lovesthebeach- hyperkalemia IS the medical term for high potassium. The percentage of people with serious complications from the pill are ridiculously small.  Just cause you have a friend who had bad side effects, doesnt mean you will.  Different body, different reaction.
  • I called my Dr. about this today and the nurse said there has not been a recall but said I could switch to a different BCP if I would be more comfortable with that. The info. that has been coming out about Yaz is pretty scary to me, so I'm switching at the end of this week.
