Copies of marriage certificate?

When you change your name, if you are doing things in person (instead of mailing in for your SS card, go to the office), do you need multiple copies of your marriage certificate, or will they just make a copy of the ONE you have and give it back?I really need to get on top of this. Thanks for the help!

Re: Copies of marriage certificate?

  • We just took the originial with us.  Check with your local offices, though, to see what they require.

  • Take a certified copy and they'll make copies.
  • In our state we ahve to pick up a marriage abstract for $2 a copy.  Some companies require an official copy, others just want to see it.  I only got one copy and carried it everywhere for a few months while I changed my name on everythign.  None of the people asked to actually keep a copy.
  • ok cool, so I don't need to request additional copies if I have the original, correct?

  • Our original certified marriage certificate was mailed to us while we were on our honeymoon. I took it to the SSA, BMV, school, and my firm's HR dept. to have my name changed - they all just made a photocopy of it and gave it back to me. We did order an extra certified copy to have on file just in case. It was $6.
  • You can't get your new SS card by mail.  You have to go in person.  They won't keep the marriage cert, and they will give you a letter on the spot with your new name on it.  I got several extra certified copies at the county clerk's office to have on hand for various other changes (CPA license, etc)

  • I just took the original with me, and they didn't even make a copy.
  • Les is right, you have to go in person for the SSA. They will just look at your marriage cert. Check out your local DMV for their licensing requirements. Ours says they don't even have to see the marriage cert, just the new SS card. But, since I didn't have my card yet, just the letter, they looked at the marriage cert. (No copies.) Banks, credit cards, etc. may require other things. I got two certified copies of my certificate just in case one needed to be kept.

  • I 'second' Vogt for getting two copies. Some places may require you sending it to them. For example, I have (had) a Vanguard account, and for a name change, I had to mail in a copy of it. I ended up never changing my name back after my divorce, because I waited too long.

I love you Missy. Even though you are not smart enough to take online quizzes to find out really important information. ~cew
  • They usually make copies, but I got the original and 3 certified copies. They were only like $2 each when you did it all at once. If you go back and need more certified copies they normally charge you like a $20 search fee. Plus, I have them if we need them. So far, SS office had me send it in and I didn't get it back.
