Re: Are you getting the vaccine?

  • I've gotten the regular one and will get the H1N1 vaccine when it becomes available to me. I love vaccines. I also ride the subway to work everyday and one can't be too careful.

  • flu vaccine, yes.h1n1 only after the shortage is over, pregnant women and young children first.  I'm at a much lower risk than my daughter who is pregnant.
  • I've never had the regular flu vaccine, and I don't plan on getting the H1N1 vaccine.  I feel pretty confident that if I contracted either, I'd be ok.  I don't fall into a really high risk category of either one killing me.

  • I was going to bring this up the other day. I don't think it should even be considered when getting a flu shot or not. She was a one in a million case. She had a neurological disorder that was dormant and something in the flu shot caused it to activate. Although, it makes me wonder, had she never had a shot before? Why now?But no, I will not be getting one. I only have once, it made my arm hurt and I got sick anyway. That was the one and only time I had the flu. I figure if I'm doing good without it, no need to go get a shot.

  • I'm going to pass... I have never gotten the flu shot and I don't work in health care. For me it's just not necessary. I would if I thought I needed it though!

  • No vaccines for me.  I've never had one and I've also never had the flu.  My doc thinks I have some freakish immune system since I am never (ever) sick.  DH probably will since he's a paramedic.

  • I don't think I've ever had a flu shot as an adult. I'm fairly certain my middle and high school required them (you did not have to get it if you were opposed for religious reasons though). But, I've never gone myself to get it. And, I've never had the flu. Although you watch, now I'll get the flu just because I said that last part out loud. Fi gets a flu shot annually because he's in the military. I'm not really sure why I don't get them, I'm all for vaccines.
  • I've never gotten one, but I have a weird phobia of them... but I do go to grad school, have an internship in a high school, and work with kids in homes... ehh.

  • I agree with OOT, I'll get the H1N1 once the shortage is over, unless I get pregnant before the end of flu season.

  • Already gotten the regular flu vaccine. I've gotten it 4 out of the past 5 years (taught public elementary school for 3 years; worked at a university last year and this year - one year I was really, really sick on the day I was supposed to get it and didn't get it).H1N1 vaccine isn't available to the general public here; it is extremely limited in who it's being administered to, and I do not fit the qualifications.

  • I will probably get the regular one because I have asthma. H1N1 I'm going to ask my doctor about.  I work at a university so it's a higher risk area, but I don't want to get it if she doesn't think it's necessary and there's a shortage.

  • I never had a flu shot before I got pregnant, but I got both shots last week.Fwiw, you CANNOT get the flu from the vaccine - but it does take 2 weeks for the vaccine to fully work, so you can still contract the flu from another source after you have received the vaccine.

  • nope, nope, never. I've never had a flu shot or the flu.I'm absolutely for vaccines. I'm skeptical of new ones that get thrown together in 6 months though. Also, I think of that morning sickness medication from the 50's (60's?) ad all the birth defects. I don't want to be a guinea pig)
  • nope.  I'm not even sure if H1N1 is even available down here yet? The hospital stopped testing for H1N1, I'm not sure how wide spread it even is down here.

  • lynda- that was a lot of "even"

  • roxy - H1N1 wasn't thrown together.  It was made the exact same way as the seasonal flu vaccine, which changes every year to include the current strains that they believe to be the most active.  The regular flu vaccine is extremely safe and has a good safety record. There's no way to make the virus grow faster in eggs, so it couldn't have been rushed.  In fact, it's growing slower than expected, which is why there are so many shortages. Also, if H1N1 was identified as a threat earlier, it would have been included as a strain in the regular flu vaccine.

  • I've never had the flu or the vaccine, but I got the regular flu shot this year since I'm pregnant. I will hopefully get the H1N1 shot this week. Because if the shortage one of the hospitals is hosting a vaccine day just for pg women, so I'm signed up for that.

  • I know.  I even thought about that have after I hit post. I really should not be typing while watching a Jon Bon Jovi documentary.

  • Ditto sucrets. The H1N1 vaccine is no riskier than the flu shot that comes out every year. It's just a different strain of the virus.

  • I'm not going to get one, well, unless I get pregnant before the end of flu season. I don't qualify for H1N1 anyways.I never have and I don't think I've ever had the flu. However I also never go to doctors so it's possible some of my really bad sickness were flu and I just got over them.I made dh promise to make me go to the doctor (and vice versa) if I show any flu symptoms just in case this year.
  • I haven't gotten any of the vaccines yet, but I will be getting at least the regular because I work for the health department.  FMIL is anurse there, and she will probably just stab me with a needle on her lunch break one day lol.  I don't know yet if I'll get the h1n1.
  • I get the pneumonia  vaccine avery 8 years because every time I get sick, it turns into pneumonia!   forget the flu!
  • ms. whompus - I've never had the flu, either.  People say that there's not denying when you've had the flu because it's that terrible.I got really sick last year with a fever (I haven't had a fever that high in YEARS), but didn't feel that bad, so I doubt it was the flu.

  • The H1N1 vaccine is no riskier than the flu shot that comes out every year. Not necessarily true. It's causing more Guillain Barre than regular flu vaccines. It also requires about 4x the amount of thimerosal as regular flu shots, which means it's not as stable.

  • the morning sickness medication was thalidomide. I think it's always in the  back of my mind.

  • There are actually two types of vaccines for pneumonia. One for "grown ups" and one for babies.

  • I wish the H1N1 vaccine had been available in my area.  I started showing symptoms two weeks ago and still am barely at 75% health.  it hit me hard.  i'm not contagious, but I feel like absolute crap.  I don't know why anyone would risk getting it.
