Maybe I'm ignorant, because we sure as hell don't have run-ins with coyotes anywhere I've ever lived... but I thought they were like, a tiny bit bigger than a fox. I am surprised.

I don't know if this is a broader issue, but I know where I live coyotes food supply is down, so coyotes are coming closer to people's house for food, and apparently are also attacking people.  There have been several dogs attacked by coyotes in my parent's neighborhood.

Alix they are about the size of a german shepard.  And are the same coloriung as a german shepard.  They also make very warm coats ;-)

Our here in CA, our coyotes are really small - like the size of foxes. But on the east coast their more the size of small wolves for some reason.

I honestly didn't know coyotes would mess with humans, or be so vicious they could kill you...yikes.

Oh how sad and terrible Coyotes are pretty common where I grew up. At our cabin you can always hear them at night. It's a really sad sound. One you would never forget. Didn't Jessica Simpson's dog get eaten by a coyote as well?

Coyotes are larger than foxes, but smaller than wolves.  About the size of a medium-large dog.Thats really strange, though, since a) coyotes tend to be solitary, and rarely hunt in packs and b) they tend to be very weary of humans, and rarely attack anything larger than them.I'm guessing rabies.

OK, so maybe a small german shepardAn adult male is 44 to 52 inches long, including its 14-inch tail. It weighs between 25 to 42 pounds.

Yeah, coyotes are usually pretty big--like 80lbs or so? I've seen them on the east coast, in montana, and CA and they've always seemed that size to me.This news shocked me--coyotes are not known for attacking humans, they will attack dogs but are afraid of people. Although you may be right that things are changing. I found this quote on the google:"The best estimates assert that, in recorded history, there have been 20 to 30 coyote attacks on humans that resulted in injuries." (Tracking and the Art of Seeing, Paul Rezendes, second edition, 1999, p. 194)

According to wikipedia - this is only the 2nd recorded FATAL attack by coyotes - the other was in 1981.  So, it's not common.

I think I heard an interview with her on CBC radio over the summer. She was a pretty good singer, and so young. That's terrible. =(
