sh!t. Paid two things w 1 check

I don't know what I was thinking, but I paid for a bill in the form of an e-check.. gave the check number.. yada yada. Well. I forgot to VOID out that check.  Next item i needed to pay with a check, I wrote it on that same check.  My question is that I assume that the bank will not process this second check that I wrote, but what WILL they do about it? Send it back as an NSF? call me? This is why I hate checks..

Re: sh!t. Paid two things w 1 check

  • Not sure. You should call them to see.
  • I would call your bank and let them know what happened.  They will most likely be able to cancel one of the payments before it's processed.
  • Call the bank right now.  How recently did you write the 2nd check?  Can you go back there & swap it out?
  • I've seen two things when reconciling people's bank statements.1. They have two checks with the same check number, but the one done electronically had some code, and then the normal one was done with the standard number.2. Sent the check back to the bank, nsf, and a new check needed to be written.I'd call the bank to see what they will do.
  • I'd call to be sure depending on what kind of services they were, but I do know that sometimes that e-check thing just needs a number to use -- it doesn't actually matter what you give it.  I have used the same check number twice for one of my bills that is like that and never had a problem.
  • I don't know exactly. It probably depends on the bank. I would think it would be returned just like NSF. You might want to call your bank and double check, though.
  • Do you not have sufficient funds?  If you do, they will most likely process both.  I don't think that the number that goes with an e-check is important.  It's mostly the account and routing that are important.

  • I use Bank of New York and double used a check.  Nothing happened but I don't know if that's standard
  • Call the bank and stop payment on the check.  Then call whoever you wrote the check to, let them know and tell them you are putting a new one in the mail right away.  Then put the new one in the mail.
  • i know people who have done the same thing and both payments were processed without a problem- I would call the bank and see what they say before you stop payment etc...
  • DON'T put a stop payment on it! It'll be a waste of time and money. I worked for a bank (WF) and they don't care about the check number. Check numbers sole purpose is to help the consumer keep track of which check went to who. As long as you have money in your account, all checks will go thru. Heck, I had a customer call in because she was upset we cleared a check that was clearly signed 'Minnie Mouse'. Had to explain to her that unless the customer calls in to report it fraudulent, we don't know... Unfortunately there are just WAY too many checks going through systems now to check each one individually...
  • You know I never even thought of this and pay for things regularly with e-checks and then write the check out 2 weeks later...I have yet to have a problem.Call the bank and they can let you know what's going on. I don't think it matters.
