Hopes WAY up

So, I found a job I think I'd be really good at. It's out of my field, but still in administrative work, in healthcare. And it's 5 miles from home. 5. I currently commute 68 each way. I keep telling myself not to get my hopes up, but they are already. And I should be thankful I have a job in this economy, but I'm just miserable.Anyone else hate their jobs so much it aches? Any advice on how to get through that until something better comes along?

Re: Hopes WAY up

  • I don't hate my job, but I hate the fact that I'm pretty much pigeon-holed in it until I get my degree, which is  years away from now.

  • Holyshit that's a long commute!!! I am sending all kinds of great job getting vibes to Nebraska!!!! I have been in that position before (hating a job so much that I ache). I found that just looking and applying for new jobs made me feel better. It made me feel like I was being proactive about getting out of there, even if it took a little while.

  • Yes, I do! I feel bad even typing that because I know I am sooo blessed to have a well paying job. But I hate it. It sucks the life out of me, makes me lazy, grumpy, and just sucks. I too have a long commute. I'm looking forward to some advice too.
  • I do hate my job so much it aches.  I'm not sure how to get through it until you can see the light at the end of the tunnel.  And GOOD LUCK with the job prospect.  I hope they see how awesome you are and you can leave your current job.

  • I know how you feel.  And, I don't want to be Debbie Downer, but when I interviewed for a job that was literally across the street from my house, I ended up NOT getting it (but it was because they ended up moving employees around within the place).  I hate my job, but I guess it could be worse.  I just take deep breaths and hide my letter opener so that I won't find myself in court for murder one day.
  • 68 miles each way?  Holy cow!  I hope you get the 5-mile-away job!
  • I've never been in a job I really hated. Sure, I'd have some bad days, but this is the first one that's been awful. It's kind of good that I have that long drive home, because I can decompress, cry for awhile, blow off some steam by screaming to angry music, and it's usually out of my system by the time I get home.

  • Vogt, that's one of two reasons why I live in Iowa instead of North Carolina now :)Take it one day at a time, hon. There's a light at the end of the tunnel. Just try to do the best to make yourself shine.

I love you Missy. Even though you are not smart enough to take online quizzes to find out really important information. ~cew
  • But GOOD LUCK and I'm sending good vibes your way :)
  • Vogt - What do you do?
  • I'd take a huge pay cut just to avoid that commute.  Man that's crazy far!  I hope you do get it.  I agree with a pp though, actively applying for other jobs helps you get through your current one.
  • I absolutely hate my job. The only reason I stay is because it's 1.93 miles from home and I get done at 4:00. I got here at 7:30 this morning and was pretty much done everything by 9:45. I think it's more boredom than hate at this point.
  • Yay!  You have all my good job vibes.  I do not hate my job, but I used to hate my job when it was being a law student/studying for the bar/being unemployed.  Thankfully I like my job now. Also, let's pretend Molly is a seeing eye dog and bring her to the g2g.

  • Yeah, and I just decided to put off full time grad school for another year, meaning I need to work full time for 2 more years, rather than one.

  • My advice is to submit an application and then FORGET about it.  I've gotten job offers for my 2 most recent jobs when I stopped thinking about them.  The ones that I obsessed about, I never got.  Watched pot and all.
Holy Crap. We survived the first year!

  • I have definitely been in that position.  It super sucks :(  Like Salt said, just keep looking.  Good luck on the close job!!

  • I work in Human Resources for a long-term care facility and several assisted living facilities. I don't mind the job so much, it's my boss that really makes me hate this place. And the commute. But I could live with that for an awesome boss. Missy - the second reason being because Iowa is the coolest place on earth, right? :)

  • Yup...that's why I'm working to change career fields.  Unfortunately, that means being poor for a good number of years because I will be going to school full time.I have zero advice.
  • I actually want to get into HR.
  • My commute is only 40 miles each way, but I hate it. It's made me really resent the job. I can't find a new job until after tax season though (april 15) so I'm stuck. I've been here 5+ years, but when FI and I bought the house, I didn't think the commute would bother me as much as it does. Sometimes it takes 2+ hours to get to work, and then 2+ hours to get home... I'm a miserable person! Good luck and good vibes on the job close to home, I know how much of a relief it will be if you get it. And if not, something else will come along, try to be patient. I just read articles of people who have nothing, who would KILL to drive 40 miles each way, and it makes me feel better, because I DO have a well paying job with security. (still stinks though).
  • I've been trying to forget about my applications, Tide. It's not easy though, I'm so hopeful. But, I talked to the HR lady at this place and she recognized my married name (small town, H's family is fairly well-known), so that's a good start. She said she'll be looking for my application and resume. I'm sure I will be taking a big pay cut, but like you said, PP, it's totally worth it to avoid that commute :) I spend about $300/month in fuel, so that alone will be huge! (Not to mention other car maintenance and the wear and tear on my vehicle)

  • Iowa is a surprisingly cool state.  I do enjoy the World's Largest Truck Stop and Whitey's ice cream.

  • 68 miles?  That must take you 2 hours to get in!!!  I used to have a 37 mile one way commute and it took me anywhere from an hour to almost 2.  It was better once I got my Prius but even then I was in the car for at least an hour.I walk to work now.

I don't get married often, but when I do, I do it in Las Vegas.

  • Calle - HR itself isn't bad. I went to school for it (Business with HR concentration), and I like the work I do. Brie - I know, I love Iowa. I'm from Council Bluffs (near Omaha), and went to school at Iowa State. Wish I could have talked H into moving over there.

  • I went to Iowa for the first time ever last weekend. The part I was in was not as flat as I expected it to be. :-)

  • I think my husband is starting to hate his job so much it aches, and I feel for him, but he won't look for a new job, so there's not much I can do for him.I think you just have to think positive and like tide said, forget about the other one until you hear something. Super good luck!!
  • Me! Me! Me!  I hate my job!  I know, like everyone else has said, we are super lucky to have one in this economy.  However, soon I won't have one.  I work for a construction company, and the jobsite I am at is going to be done very soon (Jan), so I will be on the hunt for a new job.  Hopefully one that doesn't suck monkey balls.
  • Oh, and GOOD LUCK to you!
  • An hour and 15 minutes, Smokey. I live literally in the middle of nowhere. I don't hit traffic until the last 30 miles or so.
