Medicaid question

I tried googling but it started looking like Yiddish to me and I got a headache. My brother lives in Ohio and is on Social Security and Medicaid. If he wants to move here to Vegas for a few months would his Medicaid work here? I know it works for sick care, but will it work for routine psychiatric care? He started new medicines and is afraid he won't be able to get refills.

Re: Medicaid question

  • I think that Medicaid varies state to state so he might have to reapply in NV.  The coverage could be different although I know nothing more than my best guess...

  • My sister is on that kind of coverage being a single mom and all, she is moving to Nebraska and is i the process of filling out forms because it does vary with states.  I would definitely check to see if he can get some paperwork covered before he leaves if possible.
  • He needs to call the Department of Human Services in his county in Ohio and ask them.  If he only plans to stay in NV for a few months he would likely be ineligible for NV Medicaid.
  • That's why I was nervous for him to apply here...I don't want there to be a lapse in his coverage back home. He has moved here before for a few months at a time, but he did not have to get any refills while here. He did have a couple ER visits and I know those were covered.

  • I'm not sure if it would work, but could he max out his refills at once? I do that with a couple of my medications. But that's with my school insurance, no idea how it would work with medicaid.

  • He would have to reapply. Also, love the costume. I went as her back in highschool (unfortunately noone knew who I was though)
  • Yeah, he would have to reapply. When I was a minor and getting Medicaid in PA, I had to reapply even after moving to a different county.

  • No one knew who I was either. They kept going oh wow a princess or the queen. I was like, No. I am Audrey Hepburn ::rolls eyes:: But I guess this is the same dumb bar crowd that thought I was actually 9 months pregnant and partying at a bar when I went as pregnant Nicole Richie.

  • Thanks for simplifying the Medicaid question everyone:)

  • People geez. In my case I kind of understood it as we were in highschool and highschoolers tend to be naive.
  • Have him call his State Medicaid office and ask them. Since Medicaid is a state agency, rules vary. Are you sure he's on Medicaid and not Medicare? If he's on Social Security, it may be Medicare - big difference!Best of luck to your brother.
  • OMG...thanks Phyl....I assumed Medicare was only for 65 ad older but I guess due to his medical conditions it IS Medicare. That makes a difference...no wonder I was confused.

  • Not sure if you're still checking this, but I'm in social services.  Unless your brother is actually old enough for Medicare, it is Medicaid.  Medicare was established to cover hospital costs for the elderly.  There are many reasons a person can get social security besides being elderly; is he getting benefits because he's disabled?  You mentioned psychiatric care- SSI and SSDI are social security benefits for the disabled.  It does vary greatly state to state though, so he should just call Ohio DHHS and verify; he should have a caseworker he can get ahold of.

  • Oh now I am really confused. I texted him and he said Medicare, but he is only 24. Yes, he is on social security for being diagnosed as disabled with Chron's Disease and severe depression and anxiety disorder. He was diagnosed at about 15 I think. He has trouble leaving a one mile radius and has panic attacks when he has to work. I am hoping that by coming here I can try and help him again. It was so hard to get him to come here, but when he did he was a lot happier and more productive.

  • Hmm, either way he should probably call his caseworker.  I should have clarified because technically it can be Medicare, but it's pretty unusual, esp because many places Medicaid covers more.  I think what caught me about PP was the assumption that because it was social security, it was Medicare.  However, this stuff varies so much by state that above all, he really needs to call.  All of my clients are disabled, they receive SSDI and Medicaid... but that's Maryland.  Social services are incredibly confusing.  I spent 4 yrs studying, work in it now and sometimes, i still get lost!

  • OH! Also, since you want him to stay with you to help him, it might behoove you guys to check with both DHHS offices to find out his eligibility in both states.  I'd hate for him to get out there, lose Ohio coverage and have a lapse before Nevada covers him.  These places aren't usually the fastest.

  • Thank you! It is so confusing. I am still confused by how he got it at times, as I have met other people who were physically disabled and got turned down over and over. It helps him, but at the same time, it hurts him because it gives him a safety net and enables him to not work.

  • It does give somewhat of a safety net, but is he reasonably able to work?  His condition sounds pretty severe.  Sometimes it can be difficult to get, and keep as well, which is why it's so important for him to keep in touch with his caseworker.

  • His Chron's is more under control. The depressiona nd anxiety are bad though. He is completely normal and wonderful and a joy to be around when he is in a place of comfort. He is just very withdrawn around strangers and strange environments. If you spoke to him he would seem completely normal and healthy, just shy. I feel that not feeling self worth from not working increases his depression though. And I feel the less you expose yourself to new situations and people that the worse your anxiety becomes. That is why I feel it can be detrimental that he has been labeled disabled. I think it plays a HUGE art in his lack of confidence and self esteem. The city where he is from is very poor and has horrible health care, and I wonder if he even received the right diagnosis mentally or if it was just normal teen angst enabled by his mother, and became a self-fulfilling prophecy.

  • Agreed, working provides a huge boost to mental health (it's my field!!).  If he lives anywhere near a metropolitan area, given his disability he is eligible to receive psychiatric rehab services.  They really can work wonders, and there are programs out there that can help him get employed.  I know this is a tangent, but sadly, many people that have mental health issues have no idea these programs are out there and covered.  Whether he goes to stay with you, or stays in Ohio, I would highly recommend looking into it.  Good luck with this, mental health is a tough field for all involved.

  • Sascha, I don't know if you are still checking this, but I wanted to respond to your note below.  I didn't hug you because a lot of people don't like to be hugged by strangers with a hooker heels and street wh0re makeup!Plus you are SO tiny.  I was afraid to break you....I'm glad you did hug though!!!
