What do you do if a friend expects to be a Groomsman, but he didn't make the cut?

I have a friend who is expecting to be a groomsman, but we just don't have enough spots. Should I let him know that he isn't a groomsman or should I just not bring it up to him, and let him figure it out through the grapevine? What's the correct etiquette? Is making him an usher rubbing salt in the wound. Please help! Thanks, AJ

the cut? really? Just be cautious. You might be thinking he really wants to be and he doesn't. Don't assume. It would awkward to tell him he isn't when he was never expecting to me.

If the wedding comes up in conversation, you can mention that you're having 4 groomsmen, aaa, bbb, ccc, and ddd. He'll understand through inductive reasoning that he's not one of them without you telling him specifically he's not in. I wouldn't bother asking him to usher, just include him in stuff like the bachelor party etc.

It was sad, but they decided as a couple it was best for such a bad dancer not stand up for them. Here is his picture. There were not auditions. I have a group of friends and only a couple people from the group are not groomsman. He is one of them. I was a groomsman in everyone else's wedding, but I was not a groomsman at his wedding. There will already be 6 groomsmen.

On the subject of auditions...I know someone who actually had a competition to determine who his best man would be.  Or at least that is how the story goes according to my brother.
