When did you book your HM?

How far ahead did you have things reserved?Bonus: If you've already gone, where did you go, and how was it? :)

Re: When did you book your HM?

  • I think that will depend on where you want to go and what time of year.  The Carribean or Aspen in the middle of winter I think you'd ave to book very early. We went to the Kalberri River Gorge, The Pinnacles and Shark Bay.  The majority of the area is a World Heritage Nature site.  That means there are about 280 hecta-acres of...nothing.  The River Gorge was pretty and Sharks Bay is the most Western point of Australia.  But there was a whole lot of...nothing.  It was nice to finally spend a week alone with H, but it was a bit too "Natural" for my liking.

  • We went to Costa Rica, rented a car for 10 days and stayed at 5 different places... it was amazing, we got to see about 1/2 the country. I booked everything myself, mostly online, based on Tripadvisor reviews and rates/discounts.  Booked flights about 10 weeks out, rooms were booked 4-8 weeks out, and the car we just arranged when we got to the airport (I found in my research that you save about 50% on car rentals this way, which turned out to be true). Where are you thinking of going?
  • 5 days before! We were going to go to Italy or Greece in July for a late honeymoon. But one day in March we found $305 flights from Vegas to Barcelona Spain if we left the following Tuesday, so we booked it and left for 2 weeks!

  • We booked ours a few months early, mostly because we got cheaper airfares and got to ensure we had good accommodation, given that Vanuatu can be pricey and september is one of their dry yet warm times so is quite popular.
  • We booked ours in late July for mid May. We are going to Playa Mujeres, Mexico.
  • I think we booked like 3 months out. We went to the Dominican Republic and stayed at the Barcelo Palace Deluxe.  It was an AI and really nice, but we were ready to come home after day 4 (total of 7 days) since we were too broke for excursions! :) We talked and we would go back there again, for a long weekend or something like that, and we'd bring our siblings. GL and HTH!
  • We went to a small lodge in the bush of South Africa. We booked our lodge 8 months out.  There are only 10 rooms so they book up fast. It was amazing. We booked our airline about 3 months out.I find unless you want a special room catagory (a suite or something) or you are going to an exclusive resort with not very many rooms.  You are fine booking only a few months out.   If you want a speciality room booking earlier is better because they tend not to have a lot of those room types so they book up faster.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • We went to Glacier National Park in Montana. We took the train from DC, which was really romantic. Did a bunch of hiking, camping, fishing, and loafing in the hot tub :) It was an awesome place to go in the middle of August. We had to book the train tickets 4 or 5 months out, but didn't book the hotel 'til 2 months before? We got lucky on backcountry camping permits, but generally for camping in national parks you need to book permits 6-8 months in advance (no advance notice necessary for wilderness areas of national forests though).
  • 6 months out.   We went to Lake Louise and Vancouver island. It was fabulous! I grew up on the beach so that doesn't excit me (plus the beach in July = hell). It was gorgous. There were great spas in both of our hotels, and fabulous hikes and such nearby.
  • I booked our HM cruise in June.... We leave on the 15th for it.
  • Banff/Lake Louise!I booked it 2 weeks before.  It was amazing.  We stayed in the Chateau Lake Louise.  It's very secluded.  That was our mini-moon.Our "real" honeymoon was in the summer and we took a big 10 day roadtrip through the mountains.  It was fantastic!

  • We booked our HM just a month or two before we got maried. We talked to a TA and booked our trip within a few days.We went to Hawaii and it was definitley the cliche trip of a lifetime! It was incredible! Snorkeling, helicopter tours, horseback rides, white sand beaches, and all the Mai Tais you can drink! What's not ot love?
  • Those all sound fabulous! We're trying to find a place that'll work for both of us. My ideal would be lying on a beach, swimming all day, doing a bit of shopping, then getting dinner on a beachside patio and then dancing all night. FI'd ideal would be hiking all day, checking out historical sites, then crashing in a hostel or tent. So, we're trying to find somewhere we can do half and half :)
