Coughing

I either have the swine flu or the normal flu.  I have been coughing like none other.  I have taken baths for steam, have been drinking tea, cough suppressants, cough drops, and am running a humidifer.  Am I missing anything that could help with this cough?

Re: Coughing

  • Tylenol Cough and Sore Throat is awesome.  It's a blue liquid.  Works wonders!
  • 1 way you can tell...is it a dry cough or mucousy/wet cough? Runny nose?
  • Don't laugh, but try sleeping in a chair or recliner - don't lie down. Will your doctor see you? I'd go to your doctor or a walk in place to make sure you don't have bronchitis or pneumonia.Take care of yourself, night.

  • It is in between a dry and wet cough.  My nose is running, but is running pretty well and fairly thin.  There isn't pain in my sinuses.  I am, however, getting crap stuck in that place between your sinuses and your throat.  The cough is dry, hacking, and PAINFUL.  It just hurts.

  • Do you have stuff in your throat? If so, try mucinex.

  • My FMIL works for an Immediate Care center & she sent me a spread sheet like email with the differences between the common cold/flu & the swine. I do not mean to scare you, but I would go to your doctor...from what she told me, with the swine you do not have much of a runny nose, dry cough and pain in your chest. Have you run a fever at all?? Swine will also not cause you to have a sore throat.
  • Don't lay down.  At least prop yourself up with pillows.  And, get to the DR asap.

  • Then I probably have swine.  Stupid.  I called the doctor today.  They're only prescribing tamiflu to pregnant, old, chronic illness, and healthcare people.  I don't fit those groups, so no tamiflu for me.

  • They told me not to come in because they can't do anything about it.  I'm also still running a fever, so I'm likely still contagious.

  • If they wont give you proper medication what the hell do they expect you to do!?
  • It seems like a lot of doctor's are saying "don't come see us, you're contagious lately". Um..hello...flu...need help here...potentially deadly illness...When I had some horrible coughing disease last year there was one thing that made me more comfortable, especially for sleeping. Prop yourself up in a nice comfy chair so you are at least partially seated, then get a heating pad (mint or lavender aromatherapy ones work amazing) and stick in on your chest. If nothing else it will relax you enough to get some rest and might give you a break from the cough.
  • Ooo, Katie, that sounds so helpful.  Thanks.

  • I wonder what a doctor would RX if you went to an Urgent Care or ER??? I am not sure how much copay you have for the above with your insurance...
  • I live by my heating pad. Sore throat, heating pad on the neck, bad cough, put it on the chest, horrible suicide inducing menstrual cramps, on the tummy/abs it goes.
  • I'm not in bad enough shape for an ER.  My fever has topped out at 100.6 so it isn't too high, it is just ever present.  I'm also more than 48 hours in so I don't think I'm eligible for tamiflu anymore.

  • Swine has a cough more from your chest, body aches and fever. Tamiflu will only help if you catch it in the first 2 days of your first symptom (and even then, it doesn't do much).Would it make you feel better if I talked to you about possibilities of blue toasting flutes? Did you find some yet? Because I have options for you :)

  • I don't know if I'll feel better, but you better tell me Vogt, just in case.  =)

  • I spent some time at an antique store tonight (it's official, I've turned into my mother).I found some cobalt blue martini glasses and some lighter blue wine glasses. Very vintage (like 40's or 50's). I took some pictures, but left my transfer cord at work, so I can show you tomorrow.I thought they might be a fun option.

  • Feel better! You're looking for blue toasting flutes?
  • Vogt - I will make sure to pry myself off my couch so you can show me those tomorrow.  Were they a bajillion dollars?Rach - Aww, thanks chiquitita.  I love you, too.

  • Anna - I was really set on them at one point.  It's because we have the navy.  I thought blue toasting flutes might be nice.

  • They're reasonable, especially since they're vintagy and probably will be worth some money someday. But, I have a feeling that the wedding gift fairy might leave them on your doorstep if like them.I'm headed to bed but will hunt you down tomorrow. Feel better!

  • The doctors are probably saying that because everyone on the planet is taking up their time with runny noses when all they need is rest most of the time. Anyway if your throat is sore from the coughing, I recommend gargling salt water too. Tastes gross but usually helps. And ditto on the heating pad. Feel better!

  • night, keep an eye on your chest thing.  if it gets worse, find a clinic after your fever's gone. don't let it become bronchitis/pneumonia - its a biitch to get rid of.  The heat will def help.  Vicks rubbed on your chest will help, too, if you've got that.Last time I had it really bad (bronchitis), the doctor gave me an inhaler and some other stuff (codeine cough medicine, etc). I slept in a chair with my feet propped on a stool for 4 or 5 days, to keep it from settling and so I could breathe. Take care of yourself, hon!!

  • If you cough becomes worse or is unbearable aske the Dr for cough med with codine.  I get a hacking cough every yyear and that helps.  Also a nice at home remidy is Irish whiskey.  A tablespoon or a shot with help soothe the throat and make you tired
  • You could try Sudafed PE non drowsy cold and cough.  Last week for about a week and a half I was having nasal problems.  Stuffy nose, plus runny nose, and a cough and it really helped me feel better.  It doesn't cure it, but it helped me.  This or Tylenol was the only thing I could take since I am pregnant.
