I'm too healthy :(

When I was at the ob for my first appointment, I saw a sign up for a study they were conducting about the status of biotin (a vitamin B mineral) in pregnancy.  I signed up and went in for my first meeting (giving samples of stuff for them to test) last week.  I found out today that my levels were in the normal range, therefore I don't qualify for the study.  I should be happy because it means that I'm getting a good intake of vitamins, but I was looking forward to being a part of it.I'm not gonna lie, I was also looking forward to making $220.  Oh well, at least I got $45 for what I've done so far.  And some snacks that they gave after I gave blood.

  • Well way to go and be all healthy and shiit ;)  I say getting 45 bucks to give a couple samples of blood isn't too bad though!

  • I'm always impressed when people get all the vitamins they need :) Especially impressive when you're pregnant! It's still pretty cool that you got paid $45 just for being healthy!
  • Everyone should get paid to be healthy.  I get being bummed.  I always looked at the Praxis site when I was up in ND wanting to do their studies because they pay big bucks.  But I almost never qualified.  Either you had to be a smoker or you couldn't be on BCPs.  Or they required an overnight stay during the week when I couldn't swing it.  Stupid studies.

  • Hi j!!!Ooo, I forgot, aren't you going to school for something health related?  Or am I making that up?I looked up what biotin is found in, and saw carrots and tomatoes on the list.  I eat a lot of those, so I'm guessing that's what disqualified me.  They're doing the study b/c the doctor saw that pregnancy created a biotin deficiency in rats, so they're now trying to see if it's the same in humans.  To me it seems like they should measure your levels before you get pg, but oh well, I didn't come up with it.

  • Ooh, I could probably qualify except the minor detail that I'm not pregnant.
  • J&K - my husband runs studies with smokers down here.  He works as a psychologist in a center for addiction research.  He said that they will only turn away people if they're bsc, lol.  Apparently there's good funding in addiction research.

  • ditto J&K, people SHOULD get paid to be healthy. thats a wonderful incentive.
  • Well, I'm happy your getting your vitamins! We have a ton of those studies around here because of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). They were advertising really aggressively for AIDS vaccine trials. But I always wonder who would be willing to answer the ads I see for cocaine users...
  • ac - that's right, you're so close!I wonder that, too, but DH gets a decent amount of participants.  They go to the clinic where people get their replacement therapy and try to recruit there.  They do a lot of studies with people on buprenorphine which replaces methadone. They've been having the hardest time trying to find drug users who don't smoke.  There's been a study ongoing for about 3 years and they've only found a handful of people.

  • Sucrets: I got my degree in neurobiology and behavioral science, with a concentration on community health. I wan't to go to grad school to be a dietitian asap :) So, to answer your question, yes, lol. Your DH does medical research? Does he like it? I am in the process of lining up a job for myself assisting spinal surgeons with researching new treatments...
  • Ah, I had dietician stuck in my head, but then didn't know if I was confusing you with someone else.  I tend to do that.My H is a research psychologist.  He's doing his post doc here for a few more months, then looking for a University job.  Here, they're looking for psychological factors that can help predict someone's rate of success with quitting smoking, pot, etc.  He also studies how people make decisions.  Oh, and they also look at people who have cancer but still continue to smoke.  There's a lot of stuff going on, and I don't understand it all.  :pAs he likes to say, he's not the kind of doctor that helps people, lol.  He wants to help people, just in a more indirect way.Awesome about your job!  How is that going?  That sounds really neat - I hope you get everything worked out soon!

  • That's cool! It sounds like your H and I studied a similar subject. I actually wrote my senior thesis on the brain mechanics behind addiction, but I related it to eating and not drugs. That's funny he says he's not the kind of doctor who helps people directly :) He's helping all of us in the long run with his research, knowlege is power!I am hoping to start my research job asap. I'm not sure if I'm going to like it, but I know it's bound to be more interesting than the administrative job I have right now, and it would also be a significant pay raise, which would also be fantastic.
  • j - I've got to run, but wanted to tell you that his boss did a study on discounting and obesity last year.  H had to write up the paper on it, but wasn't around for the study.Btw, you still need to dish all about your wedding!!!!
