trashing it doesn't sound all that bad

i saw this on my local board and shortly afterwards i was emailed by my photographer since i am one of her brides. i haven't gotten married yet but the whole time in planning i imagined after my wedding i was going to box my dress up and store it in the closet my whole life. after i saw this it got me thinking as to whether or not i want to do this, and the more i think about it the more i do. i think my dress is stunning and i am in love with it, but it is not really a timeless dress and if i had a daughter, i can imagine it might look like a dated dress in 20-30 years so there is no real use for it. so now i am thinking i want to do more photos in it and then just donate it. is anyone else doing this? my guess is that there are a bunch of photographers that do the same thing but here is the link to the posting it was on. http://heatherparker.com/blog/whew that was long winded, oops.

  • Don't let fish see this.
  • I assume through all that, you're referring to a "trash the dress" session?  Yep they are really common.  We didn't do one, my dress is still just hanging in a garment bag in the back of my closet though.  I've seen some really cool TTD pics though.  You don't necessarily have to ruin the dress. You can always do the session and then have the dress cleaned and boxed afterward.

  • yeah i have no intention of really trashing the dress because i would still want to donate it. that is what really got me thinking more about it. my aunt had breast cancer and maybe it really just brought it home to me (emotionally).
  • I didn't do one, but we hqave plenty of pictures of me from the wedding.  The last thing I needed was to put on my dress again just for an AW session.

And betrothed, I'm disgusted with most of the comments that you have posted. I don't think I've ever read such judgmental comments in my life. I'm so lucky that the girls I speak to on theknot are nothing like you...I would've never come on here for ADVICE if I would've encountered a big a bitch as you. I genuinely feel awful for your children or your future children, and I think it would be irresponsible of YOU not to invest in their future therapy sessions starting now. Because trust me when I tell you honey, they're gonna need it. ~jcaruncho2010

  • I wanna do a trash the dress photo shoot. But I got to talk to my friend/photographer if he can add that in the package. I saw some really cool pictures where the bride and groom played with paint and they came out really amazing! I'm all game for it!
  • i feel like playing with paint wouldnt make the dress something yu can donate with though.
  • I'm considering doing the same.I totally agree - no one in my family has ever re-worn a wedding dress from another family member. I could have used a dress from the 50s, one from the 60s or one from the 70s, and all were NMS. I rarely if ever see a bride on this board say she is wearing her mother or aunt's dress. Veil, sure, but not dress.

  • did anyone else notice the titles on the photos when you put your cursor over them? "tiny miniature bride against a huge gigantic door"
  • There are mixed views on TTD sessions here.  I plan on doing one eventually because I just like the pictures.  If you like it, then do one.

  • I will most likely re-use my dress, I'm guessing at my dad's retirement next year. So no trashing for me.But, I didn't wear a traditional dress, either.

  • I plan on doing a TTD session.  I might even do two because I would love to have one on our college campus and then one in the ocean.
  • What people don't realize is that TTD session don't always TTD.  You can get in the ocean or a lake and then clean your dress afterwards.  A couple ladies I know said their dresses were cleaner after the TTD than they were after the wedding.
  • I think it's also common to buy a used or less expensive dress to use for a TTD session.  I'm not going to do this b/c it seems like a waste to buy a 2nd dress, esp. if it's just for a photo session.  Also, I don't want to spend money on a photog's time for a session that has little to do with the actual wedding when we're over-budget on photography already. But I do admire from afar some of the pics that ppl get from these sessions.  They're just NMS.
  • Don't trash it, sell it. Get a return on your investment.
