Seating Chart with a buffet meal

I have a while before my wedding but I was talking to FI about what kind of food we'd like at our wedding: buffet or plated meal. The problem is I have some family who do not get along, my grandma (mom's side) said very rude things to my dad and got into a very public argument/yelled/cussed at my grandmother (dad's mom) at my sister's high school graduation.I would like to have a seating chart to avoid them getting stuck sitting near each other at the reception. Ideally, sit them on opposite sides of the room. My question is, can I still have assigned seating if we do a buffet style meal or would it be better with a plated meal? Thanks!

We did assigned tables and a buffet, most of the weddings I've been to recently have done the same.

You can still have assigned seating. We decided to have the buffet style and we have assigned seating. It makes it much easier for everyone. That way you dont have arguments on who sits where and having a crowded table vs and empty table. Its much easier and much more organized. Also, you can keep them two seperated!

Last wedding I went to that was a buffet with no seating chart, I made a run for it as soon as they opened the doors to the reception. Then it was table chaos for a good 5-7 minutes before everyone got seated. I vote for yes.

Thanks! This will definitely help keep the drama down, hopefully the grandma who causes all the trouble will behave herself for one day, lol.

If you think you need a seating chart, go for it, buffet or not. I'm having a buffet and we're not doing a seating chart, but that's mainly because I've been to tons of weddings in my area, and there's never a seating chart. People wouldn't know what to do, ha ha.
