NWR: Birth Control Pills

I have been sooooo tired and weak feeling since Sunday. I don't feel sick, just lethargic. The only difference in my day to day life is I started taking birth control pills Sunday.

Does anyone remember having a reaction like this when first going on the pill?

Re: NWR: Birth Control Pills

  • Every woman is different. Consult your doctor.
  • Could be the pill; could be a slight virus.

I started taking the pill thirteen years ago so I don't remember!

I'd give your body some time to adjust but definitely call your doctor if you're concerned.
  • Yeah, second (third?) ing  calling your doctor. I know when I went on the pill years ago I had morning sickness for pretty much the entire first month. My mom's friend still talks about one pill that made her crazy emotional the entire time she was on it. The hormones are different in each pill, and effect each woman differently.

  • Wow wow wow...you're telling me my heart issues could stem from my birth control?  Every so often I have a flare up of what I've always assumed were panic attacks, and sometimes an inability to slow down my heart rate after exercising or becoming excited.  I've been contemplating getting back on Xanax, but now I'm calling my doctor to have a chat about other possible causes!

  • Ugh! I hate the pill! I remember starting it in high school to help regulate my periods. The pill was far worse then the period guessing game. I also had morning sickness, I remember my dad asking if "he needed to be worried" (about me being prego), I still had my V-card but I remember how embarressed I was that he'd asked. It also made my depression far worse and had crazy mood swings. With all of that plus the already crazy mindset and hormones of a teenage girl, I was a wreck. Never going back to that. My sister takes it though and has no problems at all. So It really does affect everone differently.

I used to have morning sickness too when I started a new pack of pills.  My Mom and I figured it was because the first pills in my pack had a higher dose of hormones and that just didn't agree with my body.  So I started taking my first pill of a new pack late at night (like 10 or 11pm) to help with this.

But, OP, you should really talk to your doctor.  Medicines affect everyone differently.

  • OP, try taking them at a different time to see how you feel. I have to take mine at 4pm in order to not feel sick at all. If that doesn't work, call the dr.

  • Talk to your doc. It sometimes takes many different pills to find the one that will work for you. My first BCP made me a crazy person. I would just start crying for absolutely no reason, was moody all the time, had crazy acne and did not feel like myself.

She switched me to a much lower dose BCP and all the symptoms improved except it elevated my BP higher than it had ever been before. So now I'm on the mini pill. The one drawback is that you have to take it at exactly the same time every day or it won't be as effective, but I Have a phone alarm set so I'm OK with it. Pills affect everyone differently and it may take a few pills to find one that works for you.

This is very possible. I have Panic Disorder, and a certain kind made my attacks much more frequent, but it's been years so I don't remember which. Between the panic attacks and migranes, only a specific brand/dose works for me.

OP, definitely call your doctor. I've never had those symptoms, but BCP pills do very different things to different people.

  • I've tried a variety of pills, and I never got sick from them, but I got terrible migraines on every single one.  I just moved within the last year and my new doctor put me on the nuvaring.  So far I love it - I don't have to rememer to take anything, I don't get migraines anymore, and there is no user error because it stays in all the time.  The only bad things I have noticed is that my skin breaks out a little now - the pill gave me completely clear skin for about 7 years - and it's expensive.  There's not a generic, so I spend a pretty penny on it each month, but to be migraine free for the first time since starting birth control I think it's worth it.

But yes, I would contact your doctor.  S/he may have some suggestions for you - though I would bet they tell you stick it out for at least 1 cycle.  It normally takes 3 months for your body to fully adjust.

  • I think this is one of the few times having PCOS is beneficial. The extra hormones in the Pill help balance me out rather than throw me off kilter.

That said, when I first started them, I was a ragey, weepy, tired mess. I switched brands after 3 months, and I've been fine ever since.
