Jewish/Catholic Interfaith Ceremony Ideas XP

Hi Future Brides,

My Fi is Jewish and I am Catholic and we are getting married at a private club in NYC.
It is very important to be that our ceremony be a religious ceremony and not just a secular one.
We have found an amazing reform rabbi to officiate and a very cool (85 year old) Catholic priest to attend and say a blessing.
All the required steps have been taken with the Catholic Church,
I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions for torah or bible passages that would be mutually agreeable as well as any jewish or catholic ceremony traditions that would be basic enough for both sides to enjoy.
We are getting married under a chuppah and will probably have a unity candle.
Currently I am thinking of using:
Genesis 1:26-28,
Corinthians 13:4-8

Hoping there may be similar couples who can share their experiences!
Happy planning!

Not sure about the Jewish side of things, but in the Catholic (and Christian Orthodox) church a wedding is a sacrament and cannot happen outside of a church. Therefore many of the "traditions" in a Catholic ceremony cannot be performed outside a church.
  • The unity candle is a Protestant tradition, not a Catholic one. You could incorporate Catholic music, such as Ave Maria, which is beautiful.

Protestant tradition? The only wedding where I have ever seen this was at a Catholic one. Could you please explain? Thank you.

My parents had one at their Baptist wedding and it is pretty common in many churches, at least around here and until recently. I am given to understand that some Catholic priests will not allow the unity candle as it is not part of the traditional wedding Mass.</div>

  • The unity candle isn't a Protestant tradition. It's been used at many weddings over the past 30-40 years, whether atheist, agnostic, interfaith, or Protestant. Not many Catholic churches allow it, but that doesn't make it "Protestant".

  • The biggest part of the Catholic ceremony is receiving Eucharist. I think maybe choosing a reading from works by a Catholic Saint. As far as the Jewish traditions there is the Chuppah and the 7 Blessings.
