Wedding Colors Dilemma

Probably the most fun I have had so far is picking the wedding colors. I love making bold creative statements and I knew as soon as i picked the colors the ideas would just come storming in, which they did.
I chose Turquoise and Orange:



Cool huh? Well my dear mom and sister feel that I am planning a circus, not a wedding...really? Tonight I had a long drawn out conversation with her about these colors, how they don't go, are odd and she fears I will be severely embarrassed with all the negative comments from people. So far, its only been mom and sister. I have explained to her many of times my plans for these colors, turquoise will be the main, and orange will be the accent, plus with this combo I will be able to use a lot of hues and shades of each and still get away with it. My linens are still going to be off white, it's not like im making every other table a different color. (Yes, it was also brought to my attention that i chose Miami Dolphin colors, which i am a fan, but didn't do this on purpose.) Anyways, Mom is from old world Germany so very old school and very traditional, so anything other than white, pink or purple is not aloud. I plan on having my girls in Turquoise, holding a small bouquet of orange flowers, the guys with orange vests, and turquoise boutonniere. At first i planned on having myself holding a large tight bouquet of turquoise flowers with orange ribbon, similar to this picture:


But I honestly may cave in and do white and turquoise with orange ribbon. The centerpieces will be tall cylinder vases with battery powered tea lights in the very bottom, covered by turquoise cracked crystal rocks and a small arrangement of orange orchids or tiger lilies:



So really, this is all the color I will have besides Turquoise sashes on the chair covers. I honestly don't think that this all would be too much color, see the image below for reception picture:



Yea, so anyways, the space in which we will be given, i really don't feel we will have too much color and look like a "circus". Opinions? Ideas?

I really love the combo, but that looks more blue (maybe it's my screen) than turquoise. I know some people will say that colors can be used in any season, but by my calculations, your wedding is in September, so I might tone down the orange a tad and make it a little more late sumer/fall. Overall, I love that you are going outside the box

September 2, 2012, so Summer/Fall boarder. Which i why i wanted September, you can get away with either summer or fall colors

You'd have to have a much deeper orange and a different turquoise to match the 'Fins.

But, interesting combo!

I can see how your mom would initially have been a little taken aback since they are bold color choices...BUT I super anything outside of the box and think that it would work out well!

I love the colors!  I think they'll look great.  Not traditional wedding colors, but that makes them even better.

blue and orange are complementary colors, meaning they are opposite on the color wheel and have nothing in common with each other....they make one of the boldest statements (including red/green and violet/yellow)....because they are so bold they can be "too much".... by bringing down the saturation or chosing colors just off a bit you can tone down the "violence" of the color choices....so I would think that a tourquoise and a "burnt orange" would work well.

I like it, but I agree about tweaking the colors a little. Something like the shades in this picture (burnt orange and a lighter, more greenish teal) look great to me.

The colors SirJulius posted are really pretty together. The turquoise softens it somehow. Both of the colors in your first photo are super bright - it might be better to have one a little more muted? 

I definitely think you should choose colors you're excited about, though!

I couldn't take it anymore, i sent my mom all of the pictures i attached to this thread, immediately after i get a call..."ohhhhhh, i get it now, i like it!"....humph, solves that!

My only suggestion is please don't put the GM in orange vests. If you're having black tuxes it will look a little Halloween. If you're going with brown tuxes it'll look really fall. That might not be what you're going for.

Other than that I think it's great.

I know there's another poster that had wanted orange and blue, but her dad didn't want to, "pay for a FL Gators wedding." So she switched to a turquoise, orange, and added purple as a third color to get away from only orange and blue. Seemed to make everyone happy. That might be a good compromise for your mother since she thinks white, pink, and purple are the only way to go.

I did a darker shade of blue and orange.  No one thought they were at a circus, although some people thought we were overly big on the U of Florida colors.

Good point, didn't think of that, and noted.
She was happy once i sent her the pictures, including the "swatch" picture, which will give me a start with tones and such, although she just asks I add a little white to the bouquet, ok fine. Oh another thing, in my search for orange flowers i came across an amazing deal on real flowers instead of fake. What is the rule with fake and real flowers, either all real or all fake, or can they be mixed? Like, as in having real bouquets and center pieces, but fake boutonnieres?

Oh, and my mother hated my colors originally until I sent her a bunch of pictures of weddings with similar color schemes.  By the time the wedding rolled around, she loved my colors.  Remember, orange and blue are opposites on the color wheel, so they pop more.

I think you'd be fine with fake boutonnieres (sp?). I don't think there's a rule about mixing fake with real.

Glad she liked the pictures. I could see how it could have been hard for her to visualize what you were talking about without the pics. I like the combination! It's not one I personally would have chosen for my wedding, but I think what you're describing sounds really pretty.

The colors match me and my FI pretty well. Random, outgoing, loud and a bit on the odd side.

i love those colors!! orange makes for such a wonderful accent color. and it sounds as though you have a really nice plan for your incorporation of colors so that it doesn't look too overdone. i say go for it!!!

My friend's colors were light turquoise and orange...it was beautiful.

I love the colors!  (but that's coming from a gal who chose lime green and coral)  I get a lot of raised eyebrows when I tell people the colors, but once they see some of the things I've picked out, it seems less crazy to them.  It also helps that I'm having a lot of white in the mix.  I'm glad your mom came around.  Good luck planning!

Do it! Our colors were orange and blue and it, IMHO, turned out wonderful. I used DB cornflower and tangerine and they worked really well together.

Weird, but if you are getting married in a church, ask first about the silk flowers- ours won't allow anything but fresh ones. Rather random, but worth checking on before you buy anything!

When I think of orange and blue I think of the Broncos......I need to move out of Colorado.

I really like the color combination though. I agree a burnt orange would be gorgeous!

my mom was the same way with my colors... when you go modern like this, more traditional people may need a little help. like you see eveything in your mind but they don't get it
