Wedding date: Is it horrible?

DF and I are trying to nail down a date and we are having some trouble. I want to be married 11/11/11. It is a long weekend for everyone. He says where it is Remembrance Day( Veterans day in the States) it is offensive.

I know of people who have gotten married on that date before and no one made any fuss.

WDYT?? Am I totally out to lunch here??

Re: Wedding date: Is it horrible?

  • Why do you want 11-11-11? It's kind of lame.

And I promise that thus far, no one has gotten married on 11-11-11.

What day of the week is that? A Monday?

    I don't see a problem with it.

  • I've never heard of anyone having a problem with people getting married on Veteran's Day. I wouldn't have thought anything of it if I received an invitation for a wedding on 11/11.  Is he from a military family or in the military himself?

It's Veteran's Day.  It's a totally no big deal holiday.  Most people in the states don't even get the day off.

Tons of people get married on Memorial Day (we did), and it's a much more significant holiday.
  • I have never heard of it being offensive to marry someone on Veterans Day.  Perhaps if you have a lot of veterans in yor family, some may not attend, but I doubt anyone would find it offensive.  Most people don't even get off work for Veterans Day, not even veterans.

    Don't worry about it.

  • oh, Friday is okay.  You'll probably share a wedding date with a million other couples though.  If that doesn't bother you, go for it!

  • 1.  Not everyone will have off.

    2.  'Novelty' dates like that book up pretty fast, so before you get yourself set on it, make sure there are vendors available.

    3.  It's not offensive.

I wouldn't call it offensive at all.

  • 11/11 is my sister's and our cousin's wedding date.  It's all good.

If 11/11 is an issue within your own family then I can see it being a problem, but not solely because it's vetern's day.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • I agree with the others, it's honestly not a huge holiday in the U.S.   Not everyone even gets the day off.  I don't think it's a big deal at all.

  • I don't think it's a big deal to do it on Veteran's Day, but people are right-- not everyone gets it off.

  • I wouldn't worry about sharing the date with a ton of other couples- no matter what date you choose there are going to be other people getting married that day too- granted, a date like 11/11/11 is going to have quite a bit more... I would say it is okay-
